An amazing show from 1974. It goes from smooth and harmonic to psychedelic and out there but tight, even then. 74 is my favorite year lately. They’d been together for about 6 years so they’re really playing off each other, but in a peak kind of way, no fatigue, no bad drugs (pre-coke), what else to say but....they’re....in....the.....zone.
  • wow, man, I see it too....

I was at both of these shows..just graduated HS, had a beat up Peugot ]french car], a sleeping bag and some bucks..traveled around from show to show that summer...changed my life...just saw Dead & Co. three times in the last month...still on the bus after 60 trips around the Sun.....

Great pick. Awesome takes on classic tunes and jams. They sound like they were having fun playing off each other. Especially Jerry and Phil.

1974 was penultimate for the Dead. The culmination of the great studio work by the band in the early 70's and the sublime solo work of Bob and Jerry that became staples of their live performances. Lay Me Down blows me away....so sweet!
  • Track 20. Jam.

This jam may be the greatest jam ever performed by any band in the history of music. It goes through many movements, something like this: Space > MLB Jam > Dark Star Jam > Heaven Help the Fool Jam?? Then it falls into a sweet US Blues. The way the band is locked in with each other here is absolutely mind-numbing. The China Cat jam meanders a bit but it does so in a good way. Overall a very strong pick with career defining highlights.

Trust me on this one: tracks 19-21 are simply it. Put on your headphones, hit play and hold onto your hat (for an hour)!. Things get quiet, things get loud, things get scary intense. The Dead are playing jazz, the dead are playing scary horror music, the Dead are playing TECHNO! And before you know it, a nasty gut-bucket version of US Blues. I'd give my left pinkie to be at the Boston Garden that night. Track 20 is insidiously called "Jam 2". Perhaps just as it should be -- it is simply beyond description.
  • Great year, great performance, but...

The boys are in top form here with some great instrumentals. The Wall of Sound just does not seem to translate to tape. They are on fire here, but we lose good mixing with the WOS.
  • 1974: What a Year for The Dead!

1974 easliy remains one of my favorite years for the dead and this dick's pick is one of the reasons. we have two great 2nd sets here and quite possibly two of the sweetest pieces of music from this great year in jam>china cat>ujb jam (mislabled mlb)>i know you rider and weather report>jam>u.s. blues. the jam after the weather report espcially goes to some great places: some space, some dark star teases, the real mlb jam, and some funk. also we get a real nice to lay me down, row jimmy, and eyes, and the truckin>other one>spanish jam is pretty sick too. great, great stuff.
