    and '72 through '74 era Dead is burned deep into your brain cells, then listening to this is like speaking with an old friend. I hadn't heard my '74 bootleg cassettes for years, then Dick picked this about 6 years ago and released it on CD. I heard it a few times then, but finally pulled the trigger on the digital age last night. Wow! This pinnacle of artistry and musicianship is why people followed this band for twenty plus years after they descended from the mountain top. This is Jerry truly at his peak before the drugs took their toll. Phil, Bob and Mickey shine here as well.

    A lot of people love DP 12. The sound and playin' on this album is so much better. DP twelve is very good, but I would not put it in my favorites as many people would. This pick clear and bassy, with Jerry's guitar pearcing the air in all the right places. I will agree with the other reviewer that the edit it is a little odd. The songs are not in the order they were preformed byt the Playin' in the band the opends is amazing and is probably the highlight of the pick. It does not go down hill at all from there. From start to finish they really Let it grow. This pick is why people love 74. If you don't like this album you don't like the dead. Pick this one up for sure.

    the best moments of the 8/4 - 8/6 run are compiled here, and personally i dont mind that its not a complete show, especially when the music is this fantastic. get this along with DP 12 and you'll hear why 1974 is favorite year among deadheads. the first scarlet is long and funky. the china>rider that closes out disc 1 is insane - some great garcia/lesh interaction. there are other great highlites as well but i wont bore you; skip to the playin>scarlet>playin to hear the dead at their most awesomely miles davis jazz fusion like. it will blow you away!
