Reviews

  • Minus Davey, a flawless Monkees album

I have never been a 12 year old girl so never really loved Davey, and his voice isn't the strongest in the group. If you skip the Davey tracks this is an outstanding Monkees record. It is a great 60's pop record, and certainly the best from the Monkees. There are wonderful Mike-featured songs and Mickey sounds exuberant and spot-on through the whole album. "Love is Only Sleeping" still gives me chills. The production on the album is really detailed and there are so many interesting layers of sound and creative little touches. There aren't as many huge hits on this album but i think it holds together better as a single work.
  • Best Monkees Album

The iTunes review of this album isn't entirely correct. Yes, the Monkees brought in session players to help augment them on this but Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz all play guitar throughout the album. Tork also plays bass and keyboards and Dolenz is definitely playing drums on "Cuddly Toy" and possibly "The Door Into Summer". Either way, this is easily their best album which features a rather innovative instrument for it's day: the Moog synthesizer. Micky Dolenz purchased one of the very first ones built and supposedly, this is the first pop album to feature it. Michael Nesmith shines as a songwriter / producer on many of the tracks- hence the reason this is the Monkees' finest achievement. As one reviewer asked: where are the mono mixes?!

My favorite albums from the Monkees are Headquarters and THIS album! The songwriting is more creative and the producer with a finer ear for detail. This album is leaps and bounds better than the early bubblegum pop music.

This album is, in my opinion, the best Monkees album ever, the best songs being #'s 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, and 25. I cannot see much of a difference between the alternate mixes and regular songs. Two thumbs up, Monkees!

The new stereo remasters are great, the best so far (5 stars worth), but charging $15.99 without including the remastered mono mixes of the deluxe CD package is a rip off which I blame Rhino/Warner for more than Apple. This is a great album, the Monkees best and the mono mixes are worth having if you are a fan of this album as I have been since 1972 when I taped The Door Into Summer on to my dad's reel to reel from the family TV by holding a microphone to the teeny tiny speaker. That's low tech as you get. The Door Into Summer mono mix is superior to the stereo mix due to limitations of 1967 studio technology, more punch, clearer vocals, the piano riff front and center. The mono mixes of Star Collector, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Daily Nightly are slightly different than the stereo mixes. For those who grew up with the mono albums, the full featured CD version of this package, which includes nice new liner notes as well, is a better investment.
  • Still great after 40 years

I received this cassette tape in '87 when the Monkees were making their resurgence. I played it non-stop, I'm surprised it's still in one piece. It was great 20 years after it came out, and still another 20 after. I also like the Monkees TV episodes from this time period the best. I think they're funnier and not so "corny". I still love The Monkees!
