Reviews

  • Just too good

Yeah, the show was corny, but it was fun and the music was incredible. The older I get, the more I appreciate their music. Like Motown groups like the Jackson 5, the Monkees were a product, rather than a band of musicians. Like the Jackson 5, the best writers, musicians and producers were assembled to create an amazing musical experience. The Jackson 5 has been inducted into the RR hall of fame, because people can come to terms that the music was good despite being a highly produced product. Not so with the Monkees. They were just too good, even outselling the Beatles at the time. Anyone who dismisses the Monkees music is really depriving themselves of an incredible musical experience.

Mike Nesmith's talent as a composer gives the listener a complete emotional experience this way too short(as were almost all way back then in the 60's) pop/rock/country tune. Other songs by Nesmith also deliver the same completeness, a true pop genius. I wish he would decide to do the world a favor and record again!!
  • Beatles Monkees

They sound good, but every time I hear their songs, I can't stop thinking, "copy cats" they look and sound like the beatles. They even sort of stole the band name.

While the ITUNES download of this album does not contain the mono mixes, the cleaned up stereo mixes are the best and clearest versions of these songs ever released. Monkees fans rejoice! Pick and choose your favorites from these remastered albums (as I have done) and add them to your collection. Thanks for the effort Rhino! Bring on the other albums!
  • Listen to the Mike Mesmith tunes they are great!

Yeah eveyone has heard the Last train to clarksville and Saturday's Child. But one listen to the Mike Nesmith tunes and you'll know where the talent lied, yes some are country in sounding and a they are small in length, but hey give the guy credit, he was up against Boyce and Hart as well as Carol King and Neil Diamond! not to mention "The Birds" and other acts of the time, and I would have to say he held his own, for what he was doing. I only give three stars for Im gonna buy me a dog and I wanna be free.
