South Pacific is the best musical from the era of the grand theatrical productions of grand broadway shows.

I first heard Bali High when I was 5 (in the days before TV)and it haunted me until my 20s when I found that it was from a movie. I still like the CD and the entire sound track. It is my all time favorite musical (which is only about 5). W's jams

  • NOT Ezio Pinza, but Giorgio Tozzi

This is the movie soundtrack, not the Broadway play. Ezio Pinza starred with Mary Martin in the Broadway production of South Pacific. Rosasano Brazzi starred with Mitzi Gaynor in the movie and Giorgio Tozzi sang for him. Both Pinza & Tozzi were operatic bossos; Pinza probably was best, in my humble opinion. After retiring from the Met in 1948, he went to Broadway & had his own TV show (Bonino - 1953) and often appeared on TV from 1951 - 1955 with Dennis Day & Martha Raye. In 1954, he starred with Florence Henderson in the Broadway production of Fanny. (I know this has nothing to do with the play or the movie, sorry I'm old and get carried away.) Trivia fact - all of the fountains at the new Lincoln Center in New York are dedicated to Senore Pinza. Michener, like Ferber (Showboat) wrote about racial prejudice. Enjoy the beautiful music, but don't miss the real message.
  • Which version is this?

I don't think this is the Mary Martin/Ezio Pinza recording, is it? Isn't this the film version, which starred Rossano Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor?

Seeing her Razzle Dazzle show in Las Vegas brought back memorys of the wonderful musicsl score, cinematography, directing, talented actresses and actors. Just all over feel good movie during tough times. Hey guess we have tough times today and we have great movies to watch. All around cleam humor. Thank you Mitzi for gracing us in Cegas with you beautiful voice and so funny humor.

Rogers and Hammerstein wrote a lot of good music and while I have songs from each movie that I absolutely love, I think South Pacific has one of the BEST scores out of all the R&H productions. I mean, each one is different and wonderful in its own way, but with South Pacific every single song is brilliant! So, if you are just discovering the beautiful world of R&H, South Pacific is a good place to start. Personally I am not as fond as the movie as I am the music, but that's okay because the music is extraordinary!

I am disappointed in this album because there are no pauses between the songs, only overlaps. For example, it is very annoying that Bloody Mary begins to play before Some Enchanted Evening has finished.
