I reviewed this back in '13. Since then Johnny has left us. Saw him but a couple of years before & still had the chops. This is the best album of his by far. He was an incredible guitarist and singer. Blues, R&R, guitar jams. Outstanding. I listen to this album often. Really a great album for all times.

This review is more about the man than the album. Today Johnny Winter died. This album is the one that introduced me to his music. He is the one that gave me my love of blues. Today we will praise him for his greatness. He deserves all the accolades that he will get today and the comings weeks. He will be missed by the music world. God rest his soul and that my friends is a lot of soul
  • Johnny Winter at his best...

Produced by Rick Derringer, guitarist in the awesome Johnny Winter And and Edgar Winter bands, as well as a solo artist who produced some of the 70's best classic rock, "Still Alive And Well" is named for the Derringer-penned classic of the same name. Derringer wrote "Cheap Tequila" for the record as well. I believe he played some guitar on this recording as well. As for Johnny, he is absolutely on fire throughout throughout...I personally think Johnny's interpretations of the Stones' "Silver Train" and "Let It Bleed" smoke the original versions. He travels much stylistic ground here: country, blues, and heavy rock are all authentically burned into the grooves of this killer of an LP. Alongside the studio "Johnny Winter And" LP and "Second Winter" this is my other personal favorite of Johnny's.

This is one of the better Johnny Winter albums, while it still has the raw fire of his earlier albums like "The Progressive Blues Expiriment", it shows him maturing in songwriting skills and as a guitar player. You get hard rockin songs from Johnny Winter and you also get a few acoustic tunes that are just as good. This is a good Johnny Winter album to start out with if you are new to him. There is not a bad track on here, and that's the kind of album I want. I even think that Johnny Winter's version of "Let it Bleed" can hold it's own against the original Rolling Stones version from just 4 years earlier. Johnny does a lot of covers but that's ok because it's his guitar playing that does the talking, he adds a special firey blues style to any song. He also has a great voice that shows what rock n roll is all about. It's raspy and gritty, his amazing guitar playing fits in perfectly with his down n' dirty vocals to make a perfect rock n roll album.

Anyone who calls himself a rock guitar player who does not know every lick on this album cannot really call themselves a real player. Rude, Classic, Perfect. Sounds all one take. His playing and voice were just unreal. This album is really the guts of rock and roll at it's best. One of my top fives.
