why does he sound like he is much older than his years? well made but too conventional & sentimental for my taste.

BPB is a rare artist that doesn't bash your head with a mallet with his music. He is subtle, and has a direct tone, that is both brilliant and melancholic. After a few listens, this album truly showcases the musical growth in his style. If this is your introduction to BPB, find a nice quiet room to listen to this album.

you should check out his last album "lie down in the light" as an intro to this. I, myself, find it odd how a lot of music appreciators will write him off because "you're supposed to like him." He really is a mainstay in contemporary singer songwritter music. Please buy if you like heartfelt and new sounding music.

The 10'' Chijimi Ultraload does come with the code to download "Beware" and is very worth it!
  • Oldham's most accessible and breezy record, although not his best work...

I personally think Ryan Adams comparisons are insulting to W.O. - Oldham records make Adams sound excruciatingly dull and uninspired, especially over the last few years: Oldham keeps growing and moving forward, while Adams heads quickly in the opposite direction. This CD does contain a few instant Oldham classics, but other songs do not stand out. First listen - a bit disappointing considering my excitement over its release. Second, third listen - many songs start to reveal their own unique qualities, and the record begins to build its own nest comfortably in the midst of the Oldham canon (although not at the top). The lush instrumentation is wonderful, but often seems to make up for inferior songwriting (by Oldham's high standards). If Oldham continues to explore this type of "late Elvis" sound in the future, let's hope his material is stronger from top to bottom. Over the past week I've found myself humming "I am Goodbye," but then I realized that it is strikingly similar to W. Nelson's "On the Road Again." I love the song, but it's a little too close for comfort.
  • One of his most accessible

I can agree with the one reviewer about BPB, sometimes its been "same old, same old"...Sometimes, as laid back as he is, I wish he'd put some energy into it. Which he does here. I was sort of taken off guard. In terms of what this guy does best, this is one of his most satisying albums along with I See A Darkness. His most Country sounding since Since Greatest Palace Music, but there's an unexpected psyche folk turn at the end with "Afraid Ain't Me". Plenty of fiddle, a little lap steel, a toot of trumpet, a whistle of flute & even some tasteful sax. Things you don't always find on a BPB record. Oh yeah, the songs are none to shabby either! BPB at his most accessible. 5 stars for standing out among his others.

The ultraload version claims to come with a download code. BEWARE it doesn't!

Bonnie Prince Billy manages to make a whole album from one song. I really want to like it but it's just a boring pastiche of himself. You know it's not going to be good when you can hum along to every track on first listen. Any track heard out of context would make you smile but 13 in a row is just dull.
