Joya is the only full-length WIll Oldham released under his actual name, not the Palace or BPB monikers. Just thought I throw that out there. The album itself is fantastic and underrated.

it was really difficult deciding where to go after the brilliant 'lie down in the light'. Most late bloomers such as myself would've gone with the obvious choice, 'beware'. Instead, I went with joya, mainly because I liked the cover art. Now that I have the album, I like the songs and the cover art. Its like a two for one. So much goodness...

I don't know what this rubbish is. This album is ten years old, and was released as "Will Oldham - Joya," long before he adapted the "Bonnie Prince Billy" moniker, after releasing countless recordings under the "Palace" handle. So, disregard the reviews calling it "new" or "another great album" (though calling prolific is certainly no crime). What you're getting is Will Oldham at his prime - a fantastic record. Other than the Palace Brothers' "Viva Last Blues," this is THE definative Oldham record.

Don't Let the release date fool you. This is actually his sophmore release under the name Bonnie Billy. It was actually released in 1997. Aftrer "Arise, Therefore". Best song writer of our generation. Look up Will Oldham for more beautiful music....

Trends come and go. Seasons change. You meet new people. Lose touch with others. The one thing that never changes though, is Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy/Palace's soulful confidence. This album is among his best.

Yet another 12 tracks from the amazing Will Oldham, who's prolific nature is just staggering. "The Letting Go" was released under 6 months before "Joya", the three EPs from "The Letting GO" each have a number or previously unreleased material that is wonderful and exploratory on it own - a few great covers like "Senor" and a bunch of new material. And now even with an extensive tour of the US and Europe in between, he finds the time to write 12 completely new songs and really good ones at that. Similarly to all of his material, I have to agree that "Joya" benefits greatly from extensive listening - and I do not hesitate in saying that it really does get better EVERY time you listen to it. After the level of production on "The Letting Go" this very much more like the classic Bonnie "Prince" Billy, although do not get me wrong - I was asbolutely shattered by "The Letting Go" and its mult-layered songs. Joya is yet another keeper from this genius. Keep on writing Will, and I will keep on buying!!!!!

1st time through it you might find it all "samey", as in all the songs sound the same. Next few times through it, you'll find every other song is a little gem. Your 20th time through it, you'll find every song has an incredibly subtle hook that you'll just have to listen to over, and over, and over and over and over and over and o...
