  • Touching bases with an old friend.

The artists who I love seem like friends to me, and in the case of David Crosby, an old, old friend, dating back to my jr. high school days listening to the Byrds. The last Crosby album I’d purchased was “Oh, Yes I Can”, back in ’89, and so I looked forward to this opportunity to spend some time with this old friend, and do some catching up. I was hoping to hear about his travels, share some jokes, maybe go sailing, but it seemed like all he wanted to do was sit around and complain about the state of the world. It was sort of depressing. I’d be okay with a song or two of preachy social importance, but not the bulk of an album. Not a shred of humor, and not a love song in the collection. No songs without words, soaring purely on melody and harmony. No inspired compositions approaching the likes of “Guinnevere”, “Lee Shore”, or “Traction in the Rain”. That said, musically this album is quite good, and is full of great vocal harmony. Crosby still has that beautiful voice and his wonderful sense of phrasing . “Holding On To Nothing” is a beautiful piece, if not uplifting, and “What’s Broken” is another very nice piece that features Marc Knopfler’s unmistakable guitar. “Slice of Time”, and the optimistic “Find a Heart” are also keepers. So this collection has its gems, but as a whole, it’s a bit of a downer.

Yes he is still alive and teaching others what music is all about. Phenomenal lyrics and excellent melody. I don’t always listen to acoustical rock but when I do he’s the one..

Not much to say. I just love every song. And I don't say this as a 'blind' fan. Lots of so-so stuff in his solo work. Some brilliant, some not so much. He's as good as he's ever been here, and I like the most how vulnerable each song is. Harmonies to die for. Raw emotions made poetic. He's really asking us to reach our furthest and deepest and be our bravest. But without being preachy or too literal. I feel blessed to get more music from him! Possibly the best work of his career. Among the best without any question. Thank you David Crosby!
  • Relevance is a matter of Perspective

Most human communication, both verbal and non verbal, is the expression and recognition of intention. David Crosby has harnessed the gift in his song writing and mastery of the art which is music that his works today, this album in particular, are as relevant to the times as his previous collaborations were during former times. Relevant to the time in his life. An artist expressing himself genuinely. Who is anyone to judge what is relevant in any art form? I, for one, write this with great appreciation for the continued honesty and integrity of an artist like David Crosby who has given so much to inspire others to look introspectively first while standing up for what is ones own truth and express those thoughts in a way that allows the listener to connect to a message.. Do with it what you will, but this messenger, David Crosby, is consistently RELEVANT.

Fantastic CD. Great recording and mixing, great songs, great vocals. Crosby's voice sounds really good. Kudos to him and his son.

I was so afraid this would be a career-ending tail winded collection. Pleased to report it's simply wonderful. Cast aside your fears, children of the sixties. The Croz is back…. and the CD is astonishingly good.

It seems that working with his son has revitalized him. These songs are well written and the recordings of them are pristine without being soulless, not an easy thing to do. You expect beautiful harmonies from David Crosby. Here you get them in spades, but again, not in the heavy handed, overly synchronized current pop way. It's more of an organic feeling of voices weaving in and around each other. The hi-tech was used, sure, but here it serves rather than overwhelms the music. A breath of fresh air!

This is definitely a triumph for someone who has walked the fires of hell and not only lives to tell but whose voice soars as sweetly as when he was in his 20's. This is his best work since his first solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name. It has to be heard to be believed.

I am not at all knowledgeable on anything CSN. But, I just happened to hear "What's Broken" earlier today and I'm hooked on this album...totally. Nice going Cros...
