Reviews

  • The Point of Cowboy Mouth

The one star review seems to miss the point of Cowboy Mouth in general when critiquing this (and indirectly Voodoo Shoppe). Cowboy Mouth is the best live band you will ever see. And songs especially like "I Believe" are not overwrought as a result. They are a touring band. They're never *not* touring. There's no intention of retiring anytime soon. And when I hear "Disconnected," I think of the three hundred people that sang in unison, which (by intent) subverts that feeling of disconnection as we all come to realize that we're not so alone after all. The same with "I Believe" - I don't think of it as just this ballad; I think of Fred LeBlanc standing up from his drum kit and grabbing a guitar while JP grabs a pair of sticks and pounds the beat on the floor tom as a crowd in Hollywood, of all places, hold their hands up in the air and sings along with Fred. The point of these albums have become for those of us who've been to a show and want to hold on to that feeling. The albums are not only worthwhile, but essential only with the context of memory. But that's the point of Cowboy Mouth - they want you to remember. Remember that you're a human being. Remember that you're alive. And remember that if you have a roof over your head, that's all you need to be glad. If you haven't been to a Cowboy Mouth show - you won't "get" any of the albums. Because the magic's in the show, and once you've felt that, you will never have a bad enough day that couldn't be fixed at least a little by some of these songs.

When I reviewed this album on iTunes I thought it wouldn't be very good. Belly (which I've heard live) is campy and a little weird and I don't care for Kelly Rippa very much; however the rest of the album snuck up on me. After a couple of weeks of listening I'm hooked and I really think that, while it's not 'the mouth's' best work, it's certainly not their worst. They have some surprising inspired and catchy songs with allot of depth. I Believe is the best song on the album and surprisingly Moreen is like a punch in the gut to those who've lost close family members (at least in my opinion). Kiss tha Baby is subtly very good and Drowning Me is also good.
  • What Happened??

Compared with "Voodoo Shop", this CD falls way short!!! The fact that Paul Sanchez and Sonia Tetlow left the band explains why this effort isn't quite up to the usual Cowboy Mouth standards. They are still AWESOME live, Fred is a maniac, but this CD isn't impressive.
  • Not their crowning album.

Well, I have loved CM for a few years now and while I'm fond of Voodoo Shoppe and Are You With Me?, I can't say so much for Fearless. Granted, it's not a bad album. Just not their best. I think that a little too much of this album is Fred--not necessarily a bad thing--saying that JTG or someone else should step in and write some classics. That being said, I'm a fan of Anything and The Lord Knows I'm Drinkin'. Despite everything, they'll come back and write awesomely and continue to blow the roof off any and every day of the week.
  • I can't watch this

OK, I hate to do this, becuase I can see now how this is going to be received. YES, I miss Paul, it is ironic though that I blame him..not their fault. I always said Fred was the Mouth, Paul was the Soul..never has it been more apperant. Listen to Joe Strummer then listen to Kelly Ripa..very similiar set up, one was about a real icon..the other..I hate to say it but this album is almost a caricature of themselves. I tried to see them twice after Paul, it was all sweat no soul..Fred once said "he wants people to feel like they are 5 and to realize this concert is a birthday party for them" you left feeling better...This album makes me bitter. Sorry, it just does. How could a band put a song like disconnected on the same album as "belly"...I am NOT a CM hater, if anything I am mad at Paul for the joy he has taken from me..But this is about the album, and the guy before me had it right..brewed weak..predictable beats, not one song written worth an ounce of salt..Hate me if you will, but people who rate this album over a 3 are letting them off the hook..Once of the greatest rock revivals I have seen...shruken to the size of "belly"... Paul once said Fred is like a shark, he will eat anything around him..his appetite is apperant..
  • Not bad at all

Let me say this, after watching Cowboy Mouth live outside of Tiger Stadium yesterday and hearing they had a new album out I decided to check it out. Of course their live performances are the best with the extreme energy and fun factor. Their albums are always a faint shadow compared to the shows but this album has some fantastic songs on it that include the fun factory and the high energy. I'm thoroughly enjoying this album and would definitely recommend it.

I love CM but I definitely did not think this album was up to par w/ their other albums... It seems sort of schlepped together and just a whole lot of Freddy solo work. Bummer.
  • Where are my socks? Oh right-- they got rocked off!

I'll keep this simple. If you've liked the Mouth before, you'll love this album. Good ol' proper rock'n'roll at its finest. The perfect album for driving around in your car with the windows rolled down on a sunny fall day.
