Have been listening to Dust and Sweet Oblivion for many many years. Never get tired of it. Amazingly good music, love it now and have loved it for years.

It's understandable how Screaming Trees got lumped into the grunge label. While on first inspection the genre barely seems to be anything but a media invention with metal bands (Melvins, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden), hard rocking arena rockers (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Mother Love Bone) and punk bands (Nirvana, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr), but upon closer inspection, their is a certain darkness, a gloom, a feel that unites these disparate bands. Screaming Trees are one of those bands that gets frequently overlooked in the scene and that certainly isn't fair. Dust, their probably magnum opus stands up with the best albums that came from the movement. ST are entirely their own beast when it comes to the grunge, and are possibly one of the hardest to lump with some of the others. The gloom that permeates their music however feels very much grunge, and maybe somewhat psychedelic. All in all this collection of songs is titanic and All I Know is a great and catchy as hell epitaph for the band.
  • Screaming Trees' best work

For the past 15 years, Dust has been a mainstay in my music collection. Every song is distinct, yet the whole album keeps a consistent feel through all ten songs. The guitar work from Sweet Oblivion has been toned down, providing a better fit to Lanegan's voice. It's a shame the album is pretty much unknown to the general public, because this was one of the best to emerge from the grunge scene of the 90's, and one of the most unique sounds. The album is held together partly through the percussion work of Barrett Martin. Martin's talent is incredible, even for the time the band was together (the era which produced great drummers like Matt Cameron and Dave Grohl), yet for all his skill his work doesn't stand out but instead weaves through the music. If you listen to their last album (Last Words) and his work since the Trees (especially his solo work), you can sense a rhythm that binds the music but never overwhelms it.
  • 90's psychedelic at its best!

Uncle Anesthesia and Sweet Oblivion lay the groundwork for Dust. The Screaming Trees were truly a fantastic band that didn't get enough credit or the deserved accolades. Music is impeccable and Lanegan comes through flawlessly with his signature style and baritone. Hands down one of the best hidden gems of the 90's.

After being introduced to Mark Lanegans work with the Gutter Twins I went back and purchased the Screaming Trees catalogue. Great Music. Textured and melancholy. Dust was the only release I had not heard before- which is a shame! This album should be a classic. I would rank it with anything that came from the grunge movement. The whole album works together and represents the group at its finest. It find it amazing this group does not get the props it deserves.

it's really goooddd. A must own It's up there with Ten, Nevermind, Dirt, and Superunknown. Best tracks: Halo Of Ashes, All I Know, Dying Days, and Dime Western. Gospel Plow is a really cool ending too. Reminds me kind of the Sap album by Alice In Chains, with a little twist.

Good observation, JB... Screaming Trees are indeed not Alice and Chains, PJ or Nirvana. Not at all. They preceeded those bands and drove a different direction, even as they were lumped in with the Seattle grunge scene. They came from Ellensburg, WA, and created a sound to themselves. Dust is pure brilliance, and stands alone. As it should.
