  • Definitely not a thriller!

Great acting, but a dull movie. I believed the ratings and they are wrong! Watching cement set is exciting compared to this movie!
  • Perhaps too realistic...

I know this may be a more realistic depiction of spy work than James Bond, but it was too slow and boring to be entertaining, and there was absolutely no resolution to the story. What a flop for Phillip Seymour Hoffman to end his life and career with. I can think of few movies more forgettable than this one.

Don't go into it thinking it will be similar to a fake Bourne movie. This is the subtlety of John LeCarre and true espionage story telling. Well acted and demonstrates the difficulty countries have negotiating the current threat. Similar to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Not a lot of outward visible action because it is not an action movie--the focus is character--and building trust. Psychology intense. Gritty realism--in a world where no one can really be trusted.

I can not believe the reviews of this caliber for a movie that is this weak. I wanted to LOVE this. PSH is a fantastic actor and he does a great job here - he is very subtle, the storyline is weak. Actors of his caliber (including Willem Defoe) can only carry a movie a short distance if the story doesn’t support it. The story wasn’t terribly interesting nor were the characters. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was much better.

What an amazing subtle film. Takes the spy game to a human level that is probably closer to real life than normal movies portray. The cast is simply amazing in each role, but Hoffman is utterly amazing.
  • Great actor, slow movie

Depressing as all get out, but that's the brilliance of the actor. He played a depressing character and made you feel it with him.
  • One of the best

One of the best movies I’ve ever seen; suspense, intrigue, well-written and acted that will keep you glued to your seat and guessing until the final frame.

This movie is boring and uneventful. Pass it unless you are looking for a cure for insomnia.
