In the months leading up to the premiere of Dean's infamous role in East of Eden and filming Rebel Without a Cause, Stock and Dean took a photographic journey across the United States, from Los Angeles to New York and finally to Dean's childhood farmhouse in Indiana. And while Stock thought he was capturing a young actor in the instant before he became a household name, in fact he documented the last moments of intimacy and simplicity that James Dean ever knew.   • Good movie, great James Dean perspective

    I am a big James Dean fan from my young years. I've seen the movies several times and read plenty about him as a person. However, this movie provided a very good perspective of James Dean the person. Thought the acting was far better then expected. I initially didn't think that DeHaan would do James Dean justice. But then again who could? I thought that Dane did a very good job and capturing James Dean's mannerisms. I was sad when the movie ended as I felt I got to know James Dean better and I missed him when it was over.

    I will warn you this movie moves at a slow pace. But, it's an interesting story behind some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Everyone gives an outstanding performance in this movie. It's beautifully shot too.

  • Misses the mark at almost every turn

    Slow paced film that misses the mark at almost every turn — jazz-infused score doesn’t match the subject matter — acting is stiff throughout and in the case of Ben Kingsley so over the top that he’s acting in his own movie. No controversy is raised whatsoever, and its as if the script itself was written by looking at pictures and not mining the volumes and volumes of material available that might have added more interest to this. Not recommended, even to Dean fans.

    Dane Dehaan looks nothing like James Dean, and I'm not sure whether or not he talked like that either. It was a decent film. I'm a jazz junkie so I could appreciate the music.

    I rated it 3 stars…though if I were to speak about it I would say it was more than just OK. When I saw the trailer on YouTube a while back and the main complaint was (hold on, guess first) that Dane DeHaan couldn’t hold a candle to James Dean, in looks and voice (did you get it right? probably). It reminded me much of when Nowhere Boy came out. So, if that’s your reservation, go on and move past that because thats always a thing. Watch the film. I liked it. The actors held their own. Robert Pattinson was stunning. Dane DeHaan was a pleasure to watch. If you get over the fact that an actor will never be able to 100% capture the image of a person that actually existed (and was beloved, which makes it so much harder) it’s an enjoyable movie. Not great, not bad. Good and enjoyable.
