Good News, This Is Underrated

This was a tough time for SM, but they weren't alone. Nearly every band that was popular in the '80's (save for U2 who had to entirely rip up their playbook, Depeche Mode who incorporated more distortion with electric guitars and acoustic drums into their electronic music, and oddly...Duran Duran with a surprise hit album) was struggling to break through the major genre trends of the time: Grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam), Industrial (NIN), Techno, and increased popularity of Hip-Hop. Simple Minds by contrast made a really solid rock album, and turned the guitars way up, used some very good mixing, but overall the structure and delivery of the songs didn't change too much. Hypnotized is probably the only track here where SM take a departure and tap info a liquid groove that incorporates a more laid back Hip-Hop aesthetic, somewhat along the lines of Duran Duran's "Come Undone." I'm fairly certain any relationship is unintentional. It's an excellent track, and perhaps they should've used more of this approach throughout if they wanted to garner more listeners, especially in the U.S. market. However, they didn't. It doesn't make this a bad album, quite the contrary. It has some really great playing. Burchill sounds particularly inspired, and Kerr's delivery is as strong as ever. The mixing was also a bit different for SM at the time, and sounded quite alive. Over the years this album has held up well overall. Particularly for SM fans, if you don't have this album you should pick it up for sure. It's a solid effort.
