Uplifting Rock Band, Just Past Its Peak

By Dan Hiland
Being a long-time fan of the band, I saw them perform live in 1985, promoting "Once Upon A Time." The music was great, and I was glad I went- but the one troubling thing about the concert was that they played few of the older songs. It was only after I bought the album and gave it a careful listen that I realized Simple Minds had turned a corner, leaving behind the ethereal, spiritual rock for something more mainstream- and a little too polished for my taste. That being said, this is a worthwhile album. But for those who want to delve into the sound and vision that made this band great, go back to "Empires and Dance," and work your way forward. You'll be glad you did.
