Facing few if any empty seats in the house, Buika brought what one has to describe as a GREAT CONCERT performance to Berklee Performance Center tonight and the full moon coming was of no consequence. She soared, chatted, laughed, jammed, danced, joked, and romanced us completely. I went to hear Throw it Away on her latest La noche mais larga record and came away with the complete work of the artist in my heart.

First time heard her on NPR.org, I was gone - like a flashback to a little jazz club in Barcelona, Sarria, drinking sangria, aching for a smoke, but captivated by the singer - Buika. Her breathy, luscious, sultry voice, along with the arrangements, draw you into each new song and style.
Her treatment of classics make them her own. Jacques Brel’s “Ne Me Quitte Pas" done in a driving 6/8 time, gives you a sense of longing urgency - like a person trying to stop their lover from boarding a plane, fighting airport traffic, with the consequence of never experiencing their shared passion and fire again.
Pat Metheny lends his skills in one of the tracks, giving you an idea of the respect and admiration other great musicians have for one another.

I haven't really heard anyone with such a powerful and unique voice (lately). In some ways she reminds me of Adelle, and Buena Vista, and so many artist from the 50's and 60's, wrapped in one. I purchased the album after hearing her interview on NPR, and can not believe that when she was very young she was told that her voice was ugly, and she was asked not to sing in the choir...the teacher told her she sounded like a dog...but this didn't stop her from pursuing her passion. Just goes to show you...always follow your heart. Thoroughly enjoyed this album, and can't wait to see her live in concert.
Buika is one of the best voices coming from Spain!

I had the pleasure of seeing her in Town Hall last night. The energy and power that comes from such a small woman. She sang for almost three hours and it was effortless and passionate. She sounds exactly like her records. Even better live. No gimmicks. Pure talent. The audience last night didn't want to leave. We wanted to hear her sing more. It was just magnificent. All her albums are highly recommended.
