On Every Street

Dire Straits like the Beatles put albums out without filler in them. Yet they experimented with different styles of music with great success. I like all of their albums except for the one with Twisting by the Pool. Luckily they put the song Twisting by the pool on the greatest hits album. But everything you can get you hands on by Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits.

While their "Brothers In Arms" album was and still is one of the most popular albums they produced, This album comes in a very close second of my favorite Dire Straits albums. Like "Brothers In Arms", this album, while being very much a rock album (although iTunes calls it pop), touches on so many different genres...from the jazzy/blues feel of "Fade To Black", "You And Your Friend", and "My Parties", to the hard rockers "Heavy Fuel" and "The Bug" and more subtle rockers "When It Comes To You" and "Calling Elvis", to the country/bluegrass feel of "How Long". As for "Ticket to Heaven", I can see how mayne would find it a bit corny to be a Dire Straits song, but I believe it to be more of an experimental song and it still very much sounds like the Dire Straits everyone knows and loves. And the instrumental build-up from the vocals and piano in the title track...brilliant!

I dont really care much for this album, but the track "On Every Street" is one of my all-time favorite songs. That song alone makes this album great.

Ignore the first review...this is a great and very underrated album. Every track is excellent and unique. To say that it's not as good as their previous work is a glib and inaccurate remark. The lyrics and instrumentals are superb. Some of the best I've heard from DS. Mark Knopfler infuses a country music flavor into many of the songs, and does it better than most American country musicians. One of my all time favorite DS albums that never gets stale

I usually respect the allmusic reviews, but the one posted at the top of this page is off the mark. Yes, On Every Street is low-key, but the songs are exquisitely crafted. Knopfler's lyrics and guitar playing are superb. To say that the album "was not the comeback it should have been" presumes that it was intended to be a sequel to Brothers in Arms. It's pretty obvious that it wasn't. To say that it was "a disappointment" begs the question, "To whom?" I gather that Knopfler had enjoyed the band's earlier success but really wasn't interested in being a pop star. The band put out a excellent set of songs without thought as to how it would be received by the MTV crowd. I've owned this album in some format or another since it was originally released, and it's held up quite well. I still listen to and enjoy it regularly, all the way through.

Comments that this album doesn't live up to the preceding one, which I've read more than once from so-called rock critics, are shallow and foolish. There are hints here of what was to come in Knopfler's solo career with hints of country and folk. Knopfler's versatility and intelligence in crafting lyrics that actually mean something and conjure up vivid images are on full display here. Almost every song is excellent. Song writing at its best, a great mix of styles. One of my all-time favorite albums not just from Dire Straits and Knopfler but from all of rock. A near masterpiece that doesn't get enough appreciation.

My wife got tired of me playing this but I don't care. This is a truly great CD. Ticket to Heaven for example, is (I think) truly sarcastic but it' such a pretty song that's not how it comes across. A must have.

All of these songs are good. Mark Knopler is the lead singer of Dire Straits. I like Calling Elvis, On Every Street, and When it Comes Back to You. All three of these songs are really good and are my favorite songs on this album.

On Any Street was the first cd I ever bought and played the digital bits off of it. The music was not exactly what I expected, following their previous albums and hits, but after listening to the magic Knopfler makes with the guitar, the words and rhythms and songs... its another side of this band that so many, I think, have missed. This remains as one, if not THE favorite, of all the albums from this fantastic group.

Pure Knopfler genius. His guitar playing is flawless, smooth, flowing and extremely sexy. I love the hard stuff like Heavy Fuel but I also like the ballad, folksy songs like How Long and Ticket to Heaven. Planet of New Orleans is just sexy all around as is Fade to Black. I have heard The Bug performed by several artists and just don't like the song. No reflection on DS's, just don't like it. This CD and the live concert CD On the Night are my two favorites bar none!
