Tunnel of Love, Hand in Hand, Romeo & Juliet, Les Boys! Love love this! Oh Hand in Hand!!!!!! I play this all the time.

One of the best albums EVER! Timeless to this day, I never grow tired of playing this all the way through.

I agree with all of the 5 star ratings. Knofler sings and plays guitar with passion. Roy Brittan plays a similar epic style of keyboards as he did on Springsteen's "Born To Run" album. Every song is better than good, if you have to buy just one song start with the beginning, "Tunnel of Love" then contrast its power with the next passionate ballad about lost love, "Romeo & Juliet." I understand why some say "Les Boys" is a dissapointment. It lacks the power of its six predecessors. However, its detailed description of a "Disco Bar" in post-WWII Germany is very intriguing, tounge-in-cheek, satire; "It's all in fun now."

Yes another great album by dire straits!!! It's sad how people don't even know these songs they only know sultans of swing or money for nothing both great songs but I love just about all dire straits and mark knopfler's songs they are all classics!!! Top 3 songs: 1. Tunnel of love 2. Romeo and Juliet 3. Skateaway Thank you iTunes !!!!!

Like many here this is one of my all-time favorite albums, but unlike many that goes for every song on it. Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorite songs (I also recommend Amy Ray's acoustic cover). Tunnel of Love is epic too. i don't understand all the bashing of Les Boys in these reviews (maybe you just have to be gay to appreciate it, or understand how rare it was for such a song to even exist at the time it came out}. Dire Straits is a great band. A college buddy introduced me to them way back before anyone had heard of them, praising their cohesiveness and generous sharing of the musical spotlight with nobody overplaying. They're very much like The Band in that regard. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is a joy. Buy it. Listen to it often.

I confess: I don't understand Les Boys. I tried. However, the rest of the album is so outstanding I would have to give up listening to music altogether not to own it. The emotions, the pacing, this is the kind of music that demands your attention. From the opening bars of Tunnel of Love to the last bit of Solid Rock, Making Movies never lets go of you. I would put this in the Top 10 Rock Albums of all time--that's how great it is.

This is a classic. If you think you love indie rock and have never heard this then you don't know what you are talking about (yeah hipster listen and learn). Every track is amazing and even the 'weak link' Les Boys is a great song.

First off, this album as a whole is solid. If you think you know Dire Straits because of "Money for Nothing," "Walk of Life" or "Sultans of Swing" but not much else, you owe it to yourself to listen to just the first three tracks on this album. It's seriously beautiful. I love the guitar work on "Tunnel of Love" and "Romeo and Juliet." But I don't understand why everyone seems to rip on the last track on this album, "Les Boys." Sure, the subject matter (gay burlesque performers) is a bit unsavory, but the song itself is catchy and intelligent. It's a playful track, but that doesn't make it worthless. I would argue that it's a more thoughtful track (lyrically and melodically) than "Solid Rock," whih was the weak link for me when I first heard the album. To each his own, I guess. Give "Les Boys" a try. It's got an old time Euro-saloon feel with plinky piano and guitars. Just because it's a novelty track that sounds a bit different doesn't make it bad :)

The strength of this album is it's incredible understated musicality. Down to three members after the departure of David Knofler, the band proved that three can be equal to four. Trying to prove they had more to offer than Sultans, they put down 6 tracks which rank amongst their best (Les Boys should have been a b-side, but it's humor stands on its own.) Knofler continues in his Dylanesque style of singing with his best lyrics to date. If you know Straits as 'Brother in Arms', you don't fully know them. This should be your first purchase as it is the very best they did.
