  • Timeless, legendary

Lisening to it today - al most fifty years after its release. I suddenly understand. Where Genesis might have found inspiration, as young lads, to be songwriters.... like Joni. I hear her influence in even a band as unexpected as that. Where a generation of women singer/songwriters found inspiration. I recall my own solitude in pre-internet 70's college dorms or my youth, with guys and girls listening.... just listening..... just listening, together, enthralled.

The album was titled Joni Mitchell; however, with the words "Song to a Seagull" in her artwork, people mistook that for the title and thus it has become the unofficial name. Unfortunately the mixing done by David Crosby is poor but that doesn't stop how wonderful this album is from coming through. For anyone who likes later Joni Mitchell, I recommend you start at the beginning and see how good she was right from the beginning.

Essential. The actual title of this first album is "Song To A Seagull" not the eponymous "Joni Mitchell" An egregious record company mistake. The error in no way detracts from this David Crosby-produced initial offering of lovely acoustic guitar/vocal wonderment from one of Canada's and music's most enthralling artists.

Through and through, this album has the best writing, emotion, and musicality of 2 generations. This is my favorite Joni Mitchell album, and it is quite remarkable that it was her first. Every song is an inspiration- not to mention that in 1968 Joni's soprano was the sweetest and purest voice to hit vinyl. BUY THIS COMPLETE ALBUM, ABSOLUTELY. rl.

Yes, iTunes is wrong. If they had actually read the record they would've cough that it isn't titled "Joni Mitchell" but, instead "Song To A Seagull". But, back to the point. Song to a seagull is Joni's first record and her most true to her self as a brand new artist emerging from the dives of Toronto and Greenwich Village to the studio. I don't think I've ever listened to a record in which you can actually hear the metronome in the background. That just proves how organic it really is. A true masterpiece.

If I Had a King is worth the purchase alone, but this album is just stellar.

I-Tunes seems to be undermining Joni by not taking the original tracks. Some here sound original (Cactus Tree, Song to A Seagull) but other do not (Sisotowbell Lane) and appears to studio records from a somewhat later era. Very disappointing for a Joni fan of the original cuts. I-Tunes should get these right or at least let us know which are which. 4 stars with a penalty for I-Tunes, not for Joni who is always sublime.

This album is still a favorite of mine 41 years after I first was mesmerized by Cactus Tree. People will be listening at the turn of the next century. It's simply that pure and that good.

and it is an incredible set of beautifully poetic songs that began a phenomenal journey. You instanly feel a cool northern breeze and are lulled by magical acoustic guitar, then, you hear her. Ethereal yet soulful. Perfect phrasing. Intelligently written yet simple lyrics. The whole experience is breath taking. It resonates just as much today as when I first heard it twenty years ago, when it was already over twenty years old. To me, this is amongst the best popular music ever recorded, yet it just hints at the depth to come. An astonishing debut.
