Dr. John's Gumbo is a musical stroll through New Orleans, and it is delightful. I've liked the Dr. for years, but have overlooked this album until now. Loaded with classic songs like Iko Iko, Mess Around, Junko Partner, etc. My Personal fave is the bassy & bluesy "Those Lonely LonelyNights".Mac keeps his patented voodoo to a bare minimum on this release. This is now my favorite album by Dr. John.

I bought Dr. John's Gumb and Gris-gris at the same time. These albums were my introduction to the good Doctor and I have to say I like this one the best it is a little more acessible than the Voodoo ladened Gris-gris which is a good album but a little more bizarre than Gumbo. I had heard him on tons of blues recordings and was interested. After eating at one of my favorite resturants Heaven on Seven and hearing some great New Orleans tunes I decided I needed to get some DR.John. This is an excellent album, it just over flows with New Orleans soul and flavor. Dr. John covers all sorts of classic songs ranging from blues to soul to jazzier tunes. These songs make you feel great. Any fan of Blues, Jazz, R&B and good old fashion Rock N' Roll will dig Dr. John's Gumbo. So fry up some Crawfish tails and let the good times roll.
