I have always known of Dr. John's music, but over the last few years just started to really listen to him. Everyone wants to compare a legends latest with the past accomplishments - it is human nature - or better yet, music snobbery. I do it myself with the Rolling Stones, always comparing anything new with their glory years of 1968-1973. Artists change, they adapt new sounds, they stay open minded and sometimes return the roots that made them who they are. What this album by Dr. John has done for me is cement his place in my mind that I need to go out and go back and start from the beginning with him. Based on much of the new music out there, I would choose this over and over again. Gris-Gris and Exile on Main Street will never be replicated, does that mean great historic albums can't be created again? No, but we can still appreciate that a 71-year old can put out an album with every song being very good and a voice sounding very much like he did 40 years ago. A testament to his program. The gratitude and recovery that I hear in the songs speaks to me. I recommend that anyone get this album for the simple fact that it is a great album regardless of comparison to the past. It is relevant today.

Contrived and ill-conceived. Guess if you are a black keys fan, you'll think this is great, but there is no Dr. John here. It's just him singing over somebody else's music. But the idea was to appeal to black keys' audience, so it was critically acclaimed, but if you like your Dr. John funky and from New Orleans, you won't find it here. Luckily he at least toured with the Lower 911 for this CD, and only played a few cuts from the CD. At least they tried to make it funky. Glad Mac made some money on this endeavor, even though he sold out his soul.

Great album. Never listened to Dr. John before, but this is fantastic. And to @nmc2, it didn't say The Black Keys influenced Dr. John, it just said they were inspired and used his prior work to shape this album.

Dr. John is back in a big way. Combined with renewed good health and vigor, Black Keys Dan Auberbach produces and coaches the best out of the voodoo man. Lyrically dense and magical, this is such a mature and evolved piece of art by one of America's foremost musical masters. Top notch in every sense, I would rate this one of his finest albums ever.

This is one of those rare albums that the first time you hear it, you feel as though you've heard it before: Deja vu in the best way. It's completely strange and completely familiar at the same time. You can hear where contemporary bands like The Heavy and Black Keys got their influences… and also older acts like Tom Waits. Just raw, rough, funky and totally rocking at the same time. Voodoo, hoodoo, mojo and juju all in one. Dr. John has always been ahead of his time, and it may be that we've finally caught up to him, 'cause it sure seems like the time is right for this to be appreciated by a larger market.

Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) promised Dr. John the "Best Album you have made in a long time" and THEY have delivered. The band includes some regulars from the DaptoneRecords core and together this groups deliver an absolutely scintillating polyrhythmic performance. This is a modern updated version of what makes Dr. John and the New Orleans sound so special! A++ A must buy!
  • Great music, diminished by muddy production

The Night Tripper is back! That's the good news. Strong writing and arranging here. The producer of this defaced masterpiece needs to listen to Gris Gris on a good clean stereo. Hear all those cool bayou dynamics? The hisses, the chirps, the faraway chanting by a fire in the woods? That's the Night Tripper! This album sounds like a dirty 8 track tape from 1973. Compression does not equal roots authenticity. Dr John is completely capable of bringing the nasty without being filtered through a dirty blanket. The Night Tripper deserves better! Remaster this now!

As a '71 high school graduate who loved Dr John I must say this is 10 notches above anything he's ever done. Plus the Black Keys.....are you kidding me? A match made in heaven. You cruise down International blvd in Oakland Ca and listen to tracks 4,5,6 & 7 and you don't need anything else!!

Hopefully the Black Keys will bring Dr. John in the studio with them on their next album and tell Danger Mouse to stay far away! This album is by far the best album of 2012 thus far.
