..and this is what they’ve created. Utter geniuses, the two of them. Pure musical geniuses. Neil and Chris are godsends.

I LOVE Pet Shop Boys, and I mean, I LOVE THEM. But this album is one of their weakest. There are a couple decent tracks here and there, but nothing that stands up to what they did in the past. I’m sorry, but there is very little catchy stuff here like in their past albums. Even the production, which they usually nail on the head, is a bit boring and generic sounding for them. This album sounds like that album when an artist has run out of great ideas for songs, and then just writes songs that don’t flow well and are a bit incoherent. Sorry Neil & Chris but this album doesn’t do anything for me.

It may have taken a lokdown to take the Pet Shop Boys out of the frantic stream of life and give them a moment to remember why they made pop music in the first place. This album is a feast for the renses. For those of us who missed the detailed, intricate, layered, and all around delicious production value that set their sound apart from anybody else's all along, this album would more than remind you of that. Neil's voice never sounded to expressive, resonant, and suited for the grand procession of orchestral splendor in every track. The melodies are varied and creative to the point that the first two singles, loved as they are, do not begin to describe the soundscapes abound. Some of the tracks of which I heard next to nothing in the early reviews turned out to be simply sublime, such as "The Secret Of Happiness". This song is a mid-century French or Italian movie.... with faces of Deneuve, Vitti, or Moreau flashing with the sweeping torrents of sound and the thick loving beats carrying the drama to its conclusion... whatever you may want it to be.... The album is unified by exceptional standard in music writing and production. It has character lacing the episodes (the songs) each having its own micro-cosmos of place, time, and narrative. With such ease on the senses, it tries not to be a "concept album" which is why it certainly is... This is a terrific record, and one that is highly reommended.
