Reviews

  • One of my favorites

This album is a masterpiece. Lacuna Coil are one of those bands that do it for themselves and the fans without trying too hard, that’s why they don’t have any bad tracks or bad albums. And Black Anima is one of their best and darkest, most beautiful records. Gothic, heartbreaking, heavy and beautiful

The naysayers in the reviews either weren’t early fans—like pre-Comalies fans—or they just haven’t been paying attention to Lacuna Coil’s essence. Black Anima is a return to form, tapping into themes and edges common to Lacuna Coil’s first works, from their EP to Comalies. Black Anima is a fantastic album, and Ferro’s vocals are as primal as they are much more practiced than in his early singing. This album is absolutely true to the band’s origins while being the work of some seasoned, master musicians. Cristina Scabbia remains, as always, a goddess of metal. Five stars.
  • The move from shallow waters to intense depths

I’m both kinda amused and annoyed at the negative reviews on this one, mostly because they come from older fans who, despite being older fans, seem like they haven’t listened to In A Reverie or Unleashed Memories? And who seem confused by Ferro’s large presence, despite being one of the guys who has been there this whole time and co-founded the band? This album is a breath of life into the band’s formula, partially a return to their roots and an evolution. The mix is noticeably compressed, which removes some of the dynamic contrast, but everything’s clear enough to pick out the individual pieces, and it gets the intensity across well enough. It has a rawness and power befitting of the name Black Anima. I really like it. Guess my point is, 1. Ferro isn’t going anywhere and his harsh vocals are solid. 2. This isn’t screamo, and it’s not death metal. It’s still very firmly gothic metal. 3. This isn’t them trying to be trendy. It’s kind of like a soft reboot in many ways (this and Delirium), pulling elements of their early works and incorporating modern style. It’s a maturation. 4. The core of the band is the same as it’s always been. For decades they’ve inched closer to the surface of their ocean, lightening things, which increased visibility and drew in more and more people. Delirium and especially Black Anima is them once again plunging back into the depths of their ocean and bringing out something deep, intense, and most of all, them.

This album is amazing. I’ve always loved these guys since I first heard them way back in 2006. I also listen to bands like Mnemic, Soilwork, Meshuggah and In Flames. Lacuna Coil seems like they are moving in the direction of these bands in terms of overall heavy sound and I love it!

This is a great follow up to delirium. Love it
  • Did they turn into a bad death metal band?

It’s like someone ate Lacuna Coil and defecated a very poor death metal band. Stick with the original formula. This is awful.

I could barely bring myself to buy Delirium. Your obsession with constantly wanting to go darker and heavier on every record after Shallow Life is devolving your sound to me. If all you are trying to do is attract young metalheads in the name of profitable concert attendance, then bravo. You guys are right on track. But when I think of the grace and elegance of your first few records (Comalies was one of the finest rock records I’ve ever heard), this newer stuff just seems like a blunt instrument. It’s inconceivable that this is your first record I didn’t buy. But here we are.

Been a long time fan and I love the old and the new heavier metal. I grew up with heavy Swedish metal playing in the house so I’m used to the men’s screaming Linkin park front man also did this and no one complained other than his wife if it not for you then go on your way but true fans will love though and though
