Your life will not be complete until you see/hear this duo live. They leave the audience spellbound. I saw them at MerleFest 06 where the audience went wild and almost forgot to breathe on a few of the slower tunes. David's guitar work is phenominal ! They are a must see . . and by all means purchase their unique music for they are extremely talented in the genre of Americana/Bluesy/Folky/Bluegrassey sound

I was at the show where Black Star and White Freightliner were taped, and it was just unbelievable. Old Crow Medicine Show opened with their coked-out version of old-time music, and the place was rocking. Then Gillian and David came out... Their music is the polar opposite of Old Crow. Gillian said "You liked 'Old Crow'? Well the fun's over now!" And they proceeded to play the slowest, most mournful song ever. They had us eating out of their hands the rest of the way. I cannot wait for a new collection of songs!
  • Bluegrass? I think they are truly Original

No one else sounds like Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. They are incredibly talented musicians who have created their own beautiful sound. I think calling them bluegrass is a little misleading. While there are Bluegrass elements to many of their songs, they transcend Bluegrass and create something that's unique and not easy to describe. It's a rare gift. Wichita is probably my favorite on this particular release. Revelator is a close second. I only wish they had included a live version of My First Lover. Such a great song!

Last Summer, at Newport Folk Festival-- one of my favorite bands was about to come on... (Old Crow Medicine Show) Newport is a magical place to hear music-- when the band hit the stage, they brought out with them David Rawlings who produced their latest album and soon after, Gillian Welch took the last remaining mike. What followed was one of the most magical live performances I've ever seen. She's amazing and her version of Black Star left the entire audience in awe. She's one of those artists who will get into your head if you let her-- and if you can look beyond her unusual sound. She and Dave Rawlings are amazing together- better only when joined by OCMS.

This album, while obviously cut short, is a great example of the Welch/Rawlings genius. Do yourself a favor and catch these two live and, by all means, buy this album! I have only two complaints: 1) why did I download the Black Star EP when two of the three songs are featured here and 2) where is the rest of the show?!?

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are simply amazing artists. They strip the music down to its bare essentials... excellent songwriting and musicianship. Much of what is here can be found in studio versions on their other albums. If you like what you hear here, please do yourself the favor of listening to their other releases. And, by all means, see a live performance.

First you have to enjoy and appreciate the musicianship and subtlety of bluegrass. If you have that inclination than you will enjoy this collection at a better than typical price. Listen close and enjoy acoustic progressions that at first sound like mistakes but resolve to be both creative and uniquely melodic. Add in Gillian's complex voice and thoughtful lyrics and you have a great evening of relaxing music that makes you feel at peace with your home and reality. Not too many things will give you this for six bucks!
