L'Orange has done so much to change my view on music and art. Very talented people working together on an incredible piece.

I learned about L'Orange one night while closing my department after a very stressful weekend. Usually my manager would play all that other radio stuff, so I would always bring headphones so I wouldn't have to deal with the headache. Though this night my cell had died, unfortunately. Ultimately that added onto the horrible end of the weekend, until I heard these beats I had never heard before. It took me away from my current situation, helped me paint other scenes in my mind and I knew I was obsessed after hearing one track. That was off of Old Soul. Eventually I purchased The Mad Writer, which became my weekend album to listen to so I could leave my stress at work on the drive home. I cannot wait for this next chapter of L'Orange. I strongly reccomend you check out all of his work.

As it is now, ive heard "Blind Tiger" and "Monochrome".... but if the rest of the album is anything like these 2....SMH,,,, possibly TOP 5 hiphop albums of all time in my eyes and ive been listening to hiphop for 25 years. I havent been this excited about an album since Wu-Tang Forever, thank god i dont have to wait much longer. Stik Figa rides L'Oranges beats like no other!! These 2 will be a force for years to come #SALUTE

We start off with The Mad Writer looking into the dirty mirror of his studio apartment. He spends most of his days sitting in a chair with a typewriter in front of him waiting to be inspired. Every day he is alone and watches the world happen from his apartment window and from the sidewalks. On a day like today, though, inspiration has a difficult time finding him. In the apartment above The Mad Writer is a man who works 80 hours a week to make sure his family has heat and a dry apartment, he speaks sometimes about when his son is born he will take him and his wife on weekend vacations, and he can’t wait. The Mad Writer goes for a walk, grabs his umbrella and his briefcase. His briefcase is empty, he has it to blend in with all the people walking around going from business meeting to business meeting. He sees many different people: rich people, poor people, evil people, good people. He empathizes most with victims of crime and society. He stops at a diner and over-hears the couple in the booth behind him. The woman is his neighbor and the man is one of the people going in and out of business meetings. The man tells the woman that she has to tell her husband that it is not his baby and he promises to tell his wife about her. All The Mad Writer can think about was how a man who works 80 hours a week can lose everything to a man who makes a fortune doing nothing. He walks out of the diner and the story starts to all come together for him. He walks down an alley, looks both ways and climbs up the fire escape of an abandoned theatre. On the stage is one of many typewriters he has hidden throughout the city in case he gets inspired. He puts a mask on; see, his loneliness, thoughts and observations of the human race, and the inevitable end have made him a bit mad so he wears a mask so his words will not escape from him through his hair and only escape through his fingertips. He sits and stares at the typewriter for 20 minutes and then begins writing, before long he realizes he is writing in the dark. He turns on a spot light he hung from the curtains and notices his story is piling up on the floor. He sits back down and continues to write. The only way The Mad Writer can keep from overloading his mind is to turn his mad mind into stories.

I can honestly say L'Orange is one of my favorite producers. His beats have soul to them, it may sound odd to say this, but in a sense it feels like they are their very own entities. I don't remember how I found his music or which project from him i heard first, but I do remember that it was before the album The Mad Writer and how it grabbed my attention. Yes, I know admitting that I forgot which project it was doesn't really convey that it grabbed me, but I assure you it did. It was at that point that I knew I would check out everything he had and would put out, and since I've liked everything he's done so far, I'm certain I will like The City Under the City. That's why I can confidently give this 5 stars even before hearing it, because I have faith that I will enjoy listening to this album too.

First time I heard L'Orange I was laying in bed at night with my girlfriend; she goes to school 7 hours away from me so we really rarely see each other. I found his music on band camp a while back, and I had wanted to give him a listen for a while. I didn't know what to expect. I put on "The Manipulation EP". That first listen was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had with music in my life. My girl typically doesn't have the same taste in music as me, but I know she felt what I felt when listening to it. We layed there and listened to the whole EP. It put us into a this mellow, admiring state of mind. We both knew the ish was nice.. and that was the first and probably only time I felt like I shared a musical experience with her. Music is a huge part of my life and not so much hers, so that was important to me. L'Orange is dope. Real sh..
