  • A Disappointment...

This is without doubt the least enjoyable and most disappointing of all of the Mannheim Christmas CDs up to the point of its release (I haven't listened to any of the releases subsequent to this one such as the "Christmas Symphony" recordings so I can’t comment on those). All of the previous releases had a great mixture of memorable tunes and all of them started off with an excellent, high energy 1st track. Sadly, little if any of that is present on this recording. The opening track (“Let It Snow”) is completely lackluster and forgettable, a true introduction to what lies ahead. Most of the remaining tracks sound formulaic and contrived with very little of the energy or creativity that the earlier releases had. Furthermore, some of the songs are just clunky and unpleasant (“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and “Frosty the Snowman”). The only song that I think is noteworthy is "Catching Snowflakes" and I very much enjoy that one. Finally, I'm really, really getting tired of the "Christmas Lullaby" song... I didn't like it that much the first time it showed up on “Christmas in the Aire” and this is now the 4th time Chip’s put it on one of his Christmas CDs (and the vocals this time around made it even worse). Time to pack that one away.

I wondered how there could possibly be a newer Mannheim album I hadn't heard of before. I was so eager to hear it but now I know WHY I hadn't heard of it. I love the new age sound of the energized songs as well as the subdued tracks like "Veni Veni" they've made thus far, so I'm not partial to a certain"way" they play their music. You see all these classic Xmas hits here and are probably excited, but don't be. It's like some talentless hack paid off Chip Davis to put his name on the album & sell it just for profit. Listen to 'Frosty the Snowman' & try to refute my statement. So much potential, such a huge waste. I tried to make myself like this album & rotated it in with the other Mannheim classics yet every time a track from this comes up, it's in sharp contrast to what we've gotten from the band before.
