  • Horrible Audio Mix

I love Rush and this is no knock on the musicianship here but the audio is horrible. If you like to really listen to what Neil Peart is playing forget this album, you can barely make out the drums, the mix is terrible. Alex's guitar drowns out most of the band and the sound system is no match for this crowd. Great set list but still not worth it.....Purchase R30, much better mix, I'm very surprised Rush would allow such a crappy recording to be sold.

Rush is the greatest band of all time, but this might be their weakest live album. While it does document them at a triumphant time in their career, after a 5 year hiatus, and the set list is killer, the audio is horribly mixed - this should have gotten a remix along with Vapor Trails. Geddy's vocals sound buried under the instruments, and it's not my favorite vocal period for him anyway. The crowd noise isn't that bad, I think it actually adds to the atmosphere. Overall, it's nice to have in your collection if you're a Rush fan, but R30 and Snakes & Arrows: Live are better choices for live albums.

[BUYER BEWARE] After "The Trees" (track 10) white noise/audio fuzz permeates throughout the recording. Very disappointing.
  • One of Their Best Live Albums

I think I say this for almost every live album they have released, but this time I really mean it: Rush In Rio is a great live album, and probably one of Rush's best. While peppered with all their usual hits ("Tom Sawyer", "YYZ", "Limelight", "Spirit of Radio", etc.), Rush In Rio features some deep cuts not played live in a while: "Distant Early Warning", "The Trees", "Natural Science" (one of my personal faves, though the original is still better), and shortened renditions of "By-Tor And The Snow Dog" and "Cygnus X-1". Wow. Not only that, but it concludes with two rockin' "bootlegs" from other concerts, "Between Sun and Moon" and "Vital Signs". Also, Neil's solo is one of his best recorded to date. Awesome. All in all, Rush did a great job of balancing their concert staples with lesser heard songs and going back all the way to Fly By Night ("Working Man" doesn't count, I consider it a concert staple at this point) on this album. All in all, for the time this album came out, with the band's first tour back since Neil's tragedies, it is a wonder they could play so great, and for the crowd they played in front of (50,000+ uber-excited Brazilians), it is probably one of the best nights of their lives. A great live album that any hardcore fan should have.

  • Rush's Live Magnum Opus

The raging, surging, polyrhythmic monster that was (and still is) Rush is let loose on 50,000 Brazillians who (if judging by their rapturous response) remain an audience of unsurpassed passion. And Rush MORE than rises to the challenge..Neil, Alex and Geddy play as if was their final performance ever...they lay on the intensity and hold absolutely nothing back. Geddy's bass coils and booms aggressively....Alex's masterful guitars spit fire and neon steel....Neil simply destroys everything in his path...he is quite possibly the greatest drummer on the face of this planet.

This album is great, but i think that the volume on some songs is too low like on natural science. you can barely hear neil's ride! fantastic playing though!
