This film showed the tremendous range of Robin Williams and his magnificent performance was indeed Oscar worthy, but this wonderful score by Randy Newman seems to have been overlooked. I admit to being a fan of Randy for many years, but even if I were not this soundtrack would still be among my favorites. The music met the moment of the film perfectly and enhanced the emotions. I've always felt that this film was strangely overlooked, but if you haven't seen it, get it and enjoy the wonderful sight and sound of a film well done.

I first heard this music when I saw the film, back when it first came out. Being a kid, I thought it was mushy and boring, but still beautiful enough that I bought the soundtrack on tape. Now as an adult it's neither mushy nor boring, but haunting and powerful, and just as emotionally evocative as the film.
  • Saxophonists, especially, should own this one!

If you're a fan of lush, emotional scores, replete with rich chords, and heart wrenching melodic lines with heart-stopping beauty, then this is a must-have soundtrack for you. Not to be missed is Dan Higgins' extraordinary soprano sax work on several of the tracks. Dan is one of the most sought after L.A. studio players for films, the Academy Awards, etc. If you liked his alto work on John Williams' score for Catch Me If You Can, you'll love his gorgeous soprano sound on this album. Awakenings was one of his first major film score gigs and I'm sure Randy Newman wasn't disappointed. You won't be, either. (This review is 100% gramatically correct. Go, English!)

This is Newman's finest soundtrack after "Ragtime," I think. This has so much heart.
