Wading In The Shallows

This woman has to be one of the worst songwriters I've ever heard. She had a cute little hit back in the 90's and made a bit of a splash. She's returned with a definite 'look' in terms of the Lisa Loeb product, but her art is without substance, and reminds me of songs cheerleaders would write in their spare time.
She's completely irrelevant, her music lacks any sort of gravitas or depth.

Lisa Loeb is so fantastically fantastic I don't know where to begin... The Purple Tape's songs are so unique and pure I can't stop listening! I also think the interview disk is totally awesome, it is interesting to hear an artist's insights on how they got to where they are.
a time capsule opened...

This album was originally released only on cassette tape in the early 90's, by lisa herself... before a record company & the major label albums that everyone knows her for. this recording has been in high demand by fans ever since, and lisa has been promising to release it. that day has finally come. if you want just the album, download the first 10 tracks for $9.90. tracks 11-33 are what is on the 2nd disc of the physical release, and are commentary tracks (with the exception of the 2 in-studio tracks at the end). every song is raw, acoustic, just lisa & her guitar... some of her best songs appear on this re-release, in their original form.
Love it. Back to the beginning!

I have heard of this CD for years. Finally, I own it. I have all of Lisa's CDs and this is so fresh. I love and admire her songwriting. She is truly inspirational. Her old stuff is so unique. For those that seem confused, this is collection of music that was released prior to her break through song STAY.
It is purely excellent.

Dude, the sound of plugged-in acoustic guitar is grating. I understand its necessity for live performance but this is just plain lazy.
so good

The Purple Tape is wholly intended for people who either already love Lisa Loeb's music, or people who simply love the art of songwriting. To get a quick glimpse of what I'm talking about, check out tracks 3 and 13, to hear the song "Hurricane" and what Lisa was thinking about when she wrote it. If you like that, get the rest of this. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. As I listen to the whole set, I'm reminded of why I fell in love with Lisa's music in the first place - her music is sophisticated without sounding stuffy, and her lyrics are literate without sounding overly high-brow. It's thinking-person's music, and it's great to hear these songs in their early form. Simple, raw and amazingly strong. Highlights are "Snow Day," "Hurricane," "This," "Days Were Different" and "Guessing Game."
Great re-release of her early work!

As someone who never heard of Lisa Loeb prior to the song "Stay" going into crazy rotation on MTV back in the early '90s, this is a great look at what was a very "famous" 1st album released by this extremely talented singer/songwriter.
I really enjoyed the stories of her early days in NY as a working singer/songwriter first as part of Liz and Lisa, and then with Nine Stories. It was also really cool to hear the commentary on each of the songs.
This is an amazing look at her early work and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan, even casually to get a glimpse of the process of making what was a great album by Lisa.
At last!!
