  • A masterpiece

One of the first CDs that I have ever bought. There was a video (on laserdisc) of 3D video accompanying the music on demo at an electronics store back in the 90s. Having read the book of the same name by Arthur C. Clark, I knew I had to buy it. The original CD came with enhanced CD ROM content which was similar to the laserdisc video. This content does not seem to be present in the iTunes release, though. I still listen to this album regularly to this day.
  • A Perfect Album

An absolute triumph! This album seems to tell a story without words or resorting to Oldfield's usual repetition seen again and again with tubular bells. Based on Clarke's book of the same name, the album is a thematic companion and soundtrack to the science fiction genre. By far Oldfield's best work.

This CD is in the dusty section of my collection, but whenever it comes up on the shuffle mode of my iTunes list, I feel compelled to listen to the entire record again. No matter how many times I let it flow, Oldfield succeeds in taking me on that journey. According to the Arthur C. Clarke novel, on which this record is based, Earth is about to be turned to cosmic dust by the Sun. When a star goes supernova, there's not much left. Human beings in the far distant future are able to build a space version of Noah's Arc, headed for a distant star and habitable planet--a new home. Oldfield gives an aural account of the epic escape of these lone Earthlings. Headphones are the only required equipment to become a passenger on board this wayward starship. Don't miss the ride!
