Not bad at all. The hollow echo is slightly off putting though.

A harsh, grim, yet beautiful album. One of Enslaved's best and a black metal classic, and it's a steal at 7 dollars.

Does anybody else hear the complete rip off of the self titled track on Sepultura's "Beneath the Remains" on that track "Fenris"?

This album is pretty cool, but as is the case for most earlier Black Metal albums, that whole...playing-in-a-cave production value is the only thing that keeps me from loving it. You can make an album sound cold without all of that ridiculous echo going on, just look at the album "Faith" by The Cure for a good example. The bass guitar is almost non-audible, the vocals get lost in a wall of reverb coming from the drums, and the guitars are all highs. I find it inexcusable when this album clearly came out in a time where the ability to make a metal album sound well-produced was fairly accessible. But from what I can grasp out of the music itself, these guys are fantastic musicians and "Frost" has to be one of the best melodramatic keyboard pieces I've ever heard in my life, while the rest of the album delivers some of the best gut punching blackened slabs of heavy metal there is to offer. It's just too bad that you don't get the full experience out of it due to the AWFUL production that is showcased here.

I'll have to check their newer stuff since I'm new to Enslaved, but this album in particular rings Emperor to me. And I'm a hell of an Emperor fan. If you like In the Nightside Eclipse, this might be right up your alley.
  • a brilliant album

This is a great album, a very icy cold sound here, its perfect for viking metal fans, but other black metal warriors will like this too, its raw and pritty intense. The opening keyboard into (track 1 ) is one of the best musical pieces I have ever herd. A very powerful album, fans of the newer Enslaved material might turn away from this. But its certinly worth giving a chance.

Pure organic substance here and well worth the experience! Beautiful sonic textures. One of the best albums of this genre.

This is probably the best Enslaved album ever. This album is a great example of what Black Metal should sound like. If you like the early albums from other Black Metal bands like Satyricon or Dimmu Borgir then you will like this album. This is Enslaved second album and in my opinion the best. I think this is better than their most recent album Ruun by far.
