I love the Pogues. This is a fair best-of, but I would like to propose an alternative. If you want a true best-of-Pogues comp, simply dump all of the blazing Roses and brilliant Rum together, add "Fairytale," and you're done. Absolutely no need for the inferior later tracks scattered through here.

The Pogues are an excellent band and with a low low price tag of just 7.99 for 21 songs(!) - it's a no-brainer.
  • Great band. Good start.

As much as I like all of these individual songs and this Pogues compilation in general, I think that an audience new to the Pogues could do better by purchasing the classic If I Should Fall from Grace with God, which has some of the best songs here (Fiesta, Fairytale of New York, If I Should Fall from Grace with God) and simply has a better flow as an album, by which I mean an irresistable and thoughtfully conceived order of madness and lullaby, which is part of their signature sound (it's a bit like later Tom Waits, but with traditional Irish instruments instead of scrap metal and accordions.). Obviously, the people who put this collection together thought about this (and to some degree succeeded), but I still think If I Should Fall is the way to go. Trust me, it's a near masterpiece. They were really one of the great bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s (not just Irish bands) and when I was an American living in York in 1991, I would go to an Irish pub in Micklegate called, at that time, The Acorn, for their open-mic. You could not overestimate the influence the Pogues had on the people in the know and the music scene in general there. I wish I had recorded some of those bands and singers, but oh well. Riotous and heart-wrenching, the Pogues are not to be missed.

Irish folk music doesn't get any better. This album reminds you of a simpler time. A must have.

Do not hesitate to purchase this. Just about every song is a CLASSIC. Along with anything by the Donegal X-Press, this will make for a GREAT St. Patrick's Day soundtrack!
