I had absolutely no idea. I mean, I’d heard the name. I’d seen the face. I’d heard “My My My!” passively a few hundred times. It was hearing “Rush” (and its “these lyrics probably won’t mean anything to you unless you’re in the know”) that made me stop and listen to the entire album. Holy crap, it’s nothing short of spectacular. I’m older, so George Michael was the gay artist I gravitated towards because of his songwriting and voice, but I might just have a new queer artist for whom to root. Michael once said that he wasn’t “interested in selling records to people who are homophobic.” Sivan seems to be taking that sentiment to new heights, and his authenticity should be celebrated. The Recording Academy would be wise to consider this for Album of the Year.
