I discovered the band Pearl Jam back in the early 90s when my son introduced me to their first album and immediately saw the brilliance in Eddie Vedder's voice. I've been a fan ever since! For me, this album is his masterpiece!!! His voyage takes him through a number of musical styles, some familiar and some not. The opening track, "Invincible" is a perfect starter! A powerful song that reminds us of how better we are when we let love guide us. The standout track is "The Haves', a really strong powerful ballot that puts the greed that seems to exist everywhere in life today into perspective and reminds us of what is truly important. "Picture" his duet with Elton John brings the piano man back to his roots and the kind of songs that made us notice him in the early days. "Mrs. Mills" sounds like it might have been an outtake from the late works of the Beatles. In short, I love this thing!!!!!

Eddie’s singing and songwriting on this album is inspiring. I love Invincible as an opener and it’s the strongest song on this album. Long Way, Brother the Cloud, and The Dark are straight ahead rockers where Eddie is doing what he does best: letting go with heartfelt lyrics, backed by powerful guitars, and an all-star rhythm section. Try is a super fun, punk-pop song with Stevie Wonder on the harmonica. Very cool collaboration! The Elton John collab feels a little forced and does not reach the heights you’d hope it would. But the album closes with a really moving and interesting track, On My Way, with samples from Eddie’s late father, overlayed with instrumentals and Eddie reprising lyrics from other songs on the record. Not much new ground is broken on this album, but you hear Eddie’s unedited self in the immediacy of the lyrics and music. Andrew Watt brought a welcome, modern element in the production not heard on Pearl Jam records or Eddie’s previous solo endeavors.

...how good-- and different-- this album is. Always thought highly of Vedder, who seems to be well-respected by his peers (of all eras). But, always found his music not quite accessible enough for my ears. This album is...WOW. True Pearl Jam fans may feel he's sold out here, but, who cares? This is a great artist not afraid to dabble in various styles. There's a lot of solid, hard rocking here, but there's also a lot of catchy, poppy tunes, as well. And, his voice is among the best in rock. Some of the material, in the hands of lesser, less sincere vocalists, might not work. Not here. Vedder's voice is the one constant in a collection of varied sounds and styles. I rarely like entire albums by any artist these days. But, this one is an exception. Bravo, Eddie. Earthling is truly a great rock/pop record.

He has lost his magic. Avacado was the last record Vedder had good songs on.
