Let's be clear about this: Barbra Streisand is a great great singer, but this soundtrack is really about Marvin Hamlish's music for the Way We Were and even his arrangements for the old old tunes. That's why Barbra still uses him every time she does a live tour. And If you only bought just one non-Barbra song from this CD, try :Katie" and watch as Mr. Hamlisch weaves the Way We Were theme into a new song entirely. After decades this is still one of the best overall soundtracks from a any film...Give It a try!!! You won't be disappointed, if only for the memory of the film....

Save for the first track, the soundtrack version and title track "The Way We Were" that features a bigger production and chord progressions found on most theme song arrangements, this lp, re-released in 1993 as a remaster along with other Streisand lp's, is a collection of instrumental standards popular during the World War II era, the same timeframe as this movie is based. The genre popular around the war era was big band and this lp is arranged in that style. As long as Barbra isn't expected to sing outside of the opening track, this lp is really beautiful.

If you enjoyed the movie, the soundtrack is a must. The music was written by great composers, thrown in my the great voice of Barbra Streisand. Buy this album to reminisce on the great scenes in this classic movie, or on the way life once was- simpler, but yet still complicated.
