REM's master tapes burned down in the 2008 Universal Studios fire. These tracks are NOT "remastered", just edited and volume boosted.
  • An Interesting Take

The original album did not really need remastering although the remaster does sound a bit better, it's not night and day. What you're really paying for with this is the extra discs. They decided to remix the entire album as well and the new remixes are an interesting alternate take on all of the songs by original producer Scott Litt and the R.E.M. themselves. The demos disc and live tour discs are a fun look back as well and the two concert discs certainly bring back memories for me give than I saw R.E.M. live on the Monster tour twice back when I was in college. The 6th disc is a Blu-Ray which includes surround and high-res versions of the remastered album as well as a few music videos and also the "Road Movie" concert film which at one point I owned on Laserdisc, so it's nice to have that again :)

The Scott Litt Remix is awesome. A fun new take on one of my favorite albums. It's definitely worth a listen. There are some fun new takes on these songs here. I especially love the new versions of Crush w/ Eyeliner, Strange Currencies, Tongue and You. It's like getting a new album from R.E.M.!
  • Remixess?

These don't really seem like "remixable" songs and they generally seem to be about the same as the originals. I do like some of the live stuff but also have tons of live R.E.M. I may cherry pick a few tracks and give my original album a spin to celebrate!
  • reviewing the reissued material, not the original content

I thought this was REMs best release of the 90s and possibly the last great and most "complete" album they've released (though I thought Accelerate and Collapse Into Now were a return to classic REM form and a fitting way to go out). The original album here is an easy 5 star review for me. The bonus material, however, is a mixed bag. The bonus studio tracks contain some great music and the quality is fantastic but the lack of vocals is a negative. If these had been complete demos with full vocal performances then I'd run out and buy a vinyl reissue tomorrow. But as is, it's just too incomplete to justify a purchase. As for the live material, it doesn't sweeten the pot here. So based on the bonus material alone, if you already own the original album, I'd say pass on the current price of $39.

All these tracks can be purchased individually. If you don't want to buy it, you don't have to. Is it good music or isn't it? Don't rate the music poorly because you don't like the deal the record company made with iTunes.
  • Why the negative frequency, Kenneth?

The set’s not released yet, hence a lot of “album only” listings, I’m sure most or all can be bought separately upon release. It’s got FOUR DISCS of unreleased material, plus the original album, well worth the asking price for those interested, like their other sets. Glad they are releasing this stuff.
