Description

“Heaven Adores You” is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith, a musician whose rise to prominence in the 1990s and early to 2000s was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 34 in 2003. By threading the music of Elliott Smith through the dense yet often isolating landscapes of the three major cities he lived in: Portland, New York & Los Angeles, “Heaven Adores You” presents a visual journey and an earnest review of the singer’s prolific songwriting and the impact it continues to have on fans, friends and fellow musicians. At the conclusion of the film we have a rich view of an incredible and accomplished talent, a view that places music at the centre of Elliott Smith’s legacy.

Amazing look into the life of an imaginative, fascinating artist. Masterfully directed by Nickolas Rossi and I cannot wait to see what he does next.

I pre-ordered the film early and watched it multiple times as soon as I received it in the mail. It isn't sensational or dramatic. It is a very unique look into the early life of Elliott Smith and his reluctant rise to fame. Highly recommend watching or renting. The soundtrack will also be released on Feb. 5th, 2016 as well!

This film has an effect similar to Elliott Smith’s music leaving the viewer in an inwardly reflective and contemplative state. The cinematography is synchronistically paced with a score that thoughtfully weaves in and out of the storyline. The film flows like well written lyrics, and you can feel the heart behind everyone involved in its making. I strongly recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of Smith’s music, beautiful documentaries, or someone who has an interest in either.
  • Entertaining. Not particularly revealing...

This movie is a pleasant enough watch and it's nice to have a little more context to the albums. However, I really wish it had gone deeper. It's a very superficial recap with very few actual facts about Smith. It just skims pivotal parts of his life and death. And the inclusion of people who were intimately involved in making the records are totally underutilized. This plays a little like an episode of VH1's Behind The Music with about 45 min of PDX B-roll. Nonetheless, I don't regret purchasing and will totally watch from time to time, as it is an entertaining tour of the songs.

A very well made doc that’s told through the eyes of Smith’s family and friends, with some rare footage and audio thrown in that will even surprise hardcore fans. His song about his room that was written very, very early in his music venture was a highlight for me as a songwriter myself because it captures a stage of every musician where you just write what you know.
  • I adore you.

Heaven Adores You is superb on so many levels, with Elliott's music playing along (and some treasures in that regard), Elliott's voice as a narrator along with great interviews from family and friends, and some really stunning cinematography that at times seems to almost dance in perfect step with Elliott's music. A must see for Elliott Smith fans and music fans alike.
