  • So bad that it's... egregiously bad

I haven't seen this film since I was a kid, and I only watched it now because Tanya Roberts died, but I wish I would have just left it in my past, where vague memory makes everything seem better than it was. In stark adult reality, it's a truly awful film. Badly written, badly directed, badly acted. The plot holes are the size of the Grand Canyon. Save your money and replay a few minutes in your memory. Preferably false memory.

It was 1982 and my friends and I had gathered at my house during summer holidays to ohh and ahh over the new VHS player my parents had bought. We decided to christen it with a movie. Being all D&D geeks at the time we made our way to Video Ezy and borrowed the newly released Beastmaster. It was indeed the greatest movie ever made as it made me laugh like a 10 year old 35 years later. So much goodness in this movie. First, the reuse of Battlestar Galactica music a popular TV show at the time. The idiotic king who builds an Aztec Step Pyramid in his capital (whose only use is for human sacrifice) than is surprised when the high-priest wants a... human sacrifice. Marvel at the alien like bat/birdmen which looks more science fiction than fantasy (more BSG influence?)... the list goes on and on - the matchstick capital, the wooden sword wielding barbarian horde, the technological level to make crossbows but not the tailoring ability to make tunics that actually connect at the side, the convenience of the moat of tar around the beleaguered city, the superbly choreographed fight scenes, the mind-controlled animals (why can he mind control the ferrets and the panther but he must "talk" to the hawk?). Brilliance. The epitome of 1980s sword and sorcery movie making. FIVE OUT OF FIVE.

This is my all-time favorite movie! Like many other reviewers, it takes me back to my childhood. Unlike many of today’s movies, this one values story telling over big-budget special effects. Marc Singer is awesome as Dar and Tanya Roberts kills it as Kiri. And who can forget Rip Torn as the villainous Maax with that amazing nose! A+!!
  • Greatest Movie of All Time!

Watched this movie growing up probably over 200 times! It's one of those, you either have seen it and know all about the movie or have never heard of it in your life. If you ask 100 people...you might get lucky finding 5 people who know the movie. This is by far my favorite movie of all time. As a kid, I would pretend to be Dar in the woods with a sword (yes, I was a tomboy). I'd even draw the branding on my hand, LOL! When I went on my first date with my husband in 1998, I asked him his favorite movie and he said Beastmaster (of all movies)! I knew from that moment on...I would marry that man, and I did! Of course, compared to the movies of today, this movie doesn't hold a candle to the graphics and acting skills, but the memories I have as a child watching this movie with my brother can never be replaced!
