Description

THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON follows Zak (Zack Gottsagen), a young man with Down syndrome who runs away from a residential nursing home to fulfill his dream of attending the pro wrestling school of his idol, The Salt Water Redneck (Thomas Haden Church). On the road, Zak meets Tyler (Shia LaBeouf), a small-time outlaw who becomes Zak’s unlikely coach and ally. Together, they set out on a wild, life-changing journey and try to convince Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), a kind nursing-home employee charged with bringing Zak back, to join them.

Great work by Zach and Shia. Real life and touching and compassionate. Direction was assured and captivating until the last 5 minutes. The ending completely came out of nowhere and threw me into a rage. It was a hackneyed and unbelievable ending when the rest of the film was so straight laced. No way any of that could happen and it just about ruined it for me. Why oh why? Can’t leave well enough alone.

I first heard about this movie from YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann and how he raved about how good this movie is. Since I trust him as a reliable and honest provider of critiques, I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did. Shia LeBeouf is riveting in this film! This easily his best work! His onscreen chemistry with costar Zack Gottsagen, a young man with Down Syndrome, is genuinely authentic and sublime. Dakota Johnson’s arc was heartwarming and sweet. The cinematography captured the essence of the Dirty South perfectly. But in my opinion, the true standout in this film is Thomas Haden Church. His portrayal of a (spoiler alert) former professional wrestler who decides to make a difference in a young fan’s life was gut wrenching in the best way possible! This is a movie that you don’t want to miss. I highly recommend The Peanut Butter Falcon. It’s Falcon Time!!

I saw this movie at the theater. I could never say no when it comes to Shia Labeouf. Dakota Johnson is really following in her parents footsteps she’s a great actress. Love this movie. Zach Gottsagen did an excellent job, hope he continues on being an actor. He has a gift.
