It's a movie worth the two hours. Presented times when the strong men face the end of the journey, and how they handle it.

    All drama, zero war. AWFUL!

The main character over acts. He is upset at the injustice of circumstance and drinks too much. He yells, demands for more liquor. A young, new, inexperienced recruit shows up who knows the main character from the past. But we are never really shown specifics about their mutual past and as a result cannot put the contrast of the then and now circumstances into perspective. Shallow character development is a common theme. We really never are allowed any appreciation or attachment to any of the characters. The recurrent scenes of of boots going through muddy trenches rams home the point - yes it's muddy. Repeated scences of tense discussions with the cook on meals in the bunker that goes nowhere. It had potential but without meaningful dialogue and know deep character development I was relieved at the end when everyone died and the movie was finallly over. I am sad to say.
  • Really, Really Quiet on the Western Front

Possibly the slowest, quietest, least action-oriented war picture I've ever seen. At times I felt like I was watching a Monty Python parody of the ultimate British war flick as the cast sits around waiting and waiting and waiting interminably for battle. I get what they were trying to say with it, and it looks very good, and it's reasonably well-acted. But all that didn't keep me from nodding off a few times.
  • Not really a war movie

More of a war drama than a war action movie. A ton of character development that is acted and scripted well, but drags a bit considering they are at the front and not much is happening. More like Thin Red Line than Saving Private Ryan.
  • Depressing & Improbable

Without giving away too for those who may wish to watch this movie, be prepared for a depressing film. Listen closely to the predictions made by the initial characters, for they turn out to be quite accurate. The acting isn't bad, and the topicality is true. But, the way in which the story line was developed lacks both accuracy and flavor. If you want to be drepressed by a movie, then this story line and its conclusion is right up your alley. This movie will remind you of "The Perfect Storm."

Completely missed the release of this gem, but caught it on a recent flight. Poignant story, low key in just the right ways, beautifully acted, powerfully filmed. One heroic everyman after another--from Stanhope to Uncle to Jimmy to long-suffering Mason.

I am very glad I rented this movie. It is such a great story and portrait of a time and struggle that most Americans aren't aware of. Very well acted, flawless in production and direction. It is so very powerful and relevent to today. I highly recommend it. Maybe not for a date night.
  • Love War Films That Tell The Truth

War films have been a passion of mine. Films should entice the audience to look further into the events that have unfolded, rather than show a screen play full of BS and eyecandy action, in which will be forgotten in mere minutes. Those who have knowledge of WWI will love this movie. WWI was one of the most hopeless conflicts ever seen and this movie portrays it respectfully. Don't bash this movie with expectations of mind numbing action, its a film that tells a different war story.
