Description

With 20th Century Women, acclaimed filmmaker Mike Mills (the Academy Award-winning Beginners) brings us a richly multilayered, funny, heart-stirring celebration of the complexities of women, family, time and the connections we search for our whole lives. It is a film that keeps redefining itself as it goes along, shifting with its characters as they navigate the pivotal summer of 1979. Set in Santa Barbara, the film follows Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie (newcomer Lucas Jade Zumann, in a breakout performance) at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women in Jamie’s upbringing -- via Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist living as a boarder in the Fields’ home, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a savvy and provocative teenage neighbor.

Sometimes you just have to step away from all the CGI, special effects, apocalyptic cliffhangers, and wise cracking superheroes. And what you're left with is the fact that we all go through life each day facing things both mundane, and extraordinary. The ensemble cast (Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup, and Lucas Jade Zumann) works beautifully together. The chemistry between them all is excellent, and while each of them has the opportunity to shine, the performances of veteran Bening brings a tear to the eye. I think its a must see film.
  • A so so story with very good actors

Annette Benning was great with all the nuisances and layers of her role as the mother, and the cast made the most of each of their roles. Overall I found the movie to be a bit of a struggle, a little wandery and too slow moving.

As of April 2018 iTunes is classifying this movie as a comedy. It's not a comedy, it's a drama. Not a heavy drama, but a drama nonetheless, based on the real-life experiences of writer and director Mike Mills when he was growing up in the late 1970s in Santa Barbara. The movie is redolent of that time, subtle, nuanced, highly compassionate, and unexpectedly transcendent. A movie to absorb.

How good, how true can it get. I was the Lou Reed early 20’s in the early 80’s and am the invisible, transparent to all and unnoticed woman now. Despite career, despite achievements, despite loyalty, love and giving. How insightful can one film be about generations, times, women and men and the ultimate loss and gain at the end of it all. Best film of the year! Best actresses of the year, best set design, best, best, painfully truly best!

One of the best I've seen. Real and touching. Annette Benning should win an award for this one.

One of the more depressing, dark movies I've forced myself to watch, because I paid for it. So tired of these. As if we are not depressed enough.

One of the most thought-provoking films that I have seen this year that reflects on the four generations of women and generations in general. The story and the history that it represents is be it the late 1970s or now, it is raw and real. The soundtrack is commendable too!
