  • Springsteen doesn’t owe you anything . . .

To those who are either disapprove or are offended by Springsteen’s recent releases: The man does not owe it to you to craft a certain type of song or album, nor is he obligated to check with you before releasing whatever the hell he feels like putting out there. If you don’t like it, don’t bloody listen to it.
  • Not exactly Bruce at his most creative

With exceptions to "Hey Blue Eyes," the songs just aren't anything to write home about. "Mary Mary" sounds like another "Leah" from D&D. "American Beauty" is song that could have been quite good if the vocal style wasn't so distracting. And "Hurry Up Sundown" is fairly enjoyable even if it sounds rather similar to "Surprise, Surprise." Then again, if these songs were translated into live performances, maybe my outlook would be difference. Springsteen has been known to do that...

I liked that song so I bought it. The rest are pretty weak. The most popular song is about Abu Ghraib. Listened to it, didn't really find it very musical, couldn't justify spending money on it.

Definitely not some of Bruce's best work. The song, American Beauty, is a re-worked Frankie Fell in Love. Mary Mary is a revisit of Leah from Devils and Dust. Hey Blue Eyes is the only "original" sounding song with some merit. I'm still not sure if I like the direction his music heading toward? But he is The Boss! And it is his music.

"American Beauty" is a rewrite of "Frankie Fell In Love" which is a rewrite of Little Steven's "Affection" (from The Sopranos' soundtrack). I like all three. Just sayin. See for yourself...

I don’t know anyone on the face of the earth that is more scrutinized then, Bruce Springsteen. If he tries something different or puts out a song or an album that is not “Born to Run” everyone is ready to nail him to a cross. American Beauty is a four song EP of outtakes. It is not a album or a master piece it is for songs of original material that would not have seen the light of day (Catchy name for a song) if it wasn’t for Record Days. Bruce could have been like some other artist and put out an album of cover tunes or better yet nothing at all. Is it his best work? No. Is it bad? No. If you’re a Bruce fan you will like it. If you’re looking for the next “Born in the USA” look somewhere else and lighten up.
  • A big disappointment

This material does not measure up to the quality of a typical Springsteen B-side back when everything was released on vinyl. It is commendable that he released this to support record stores, but these tracks are throwaways musically and lyrically. The last one is just trash. Bruce seems to be riding this train as long as he can. He needs to pull into the station, get off, and reflect upon whether or not he is still relevant as a rock n roll artist.
  • Better than...

It's a plain fact that Bruce's "outakes" are usually 100% better than the "A" stuff that most of today's artists are calling "music".

The 4 songs on this EP prove that Bruce's writing remains in top form. The standout is Hey Blue Eyes, which contains some of the best lyrics he's ever written...and that's saying a lot. Definitely worth adding to your library.
