Reviews

  • Far from worth it.

On this recording the London Philharmonic is sloppy, and boring! It's most likely because of Marin Alsop. I have yet to hear anything from her that has engaged my mind even remotely. Yet another failure from her. Berlin and Simon Rattle is the way to go.
  • Superb Brahms

The Art of Brahms is difficult to master. The London Philharmonic fills the void of silence to produce a profound performance of Symphony #2. Bravi Tutti LPO.

Another fine installment in Marin Alsop's Brahms series with the London Philharmonic. As in the 1st Symphony this performance recalls the interpretations of Alsop's mentor Leonard Bernstein, particularly his earlier cycle with the Nwe York Philharmonic. The lyrical 2nd Symphony glows in Alsop's performance and the LPO plays with verve and good ensemble. Brahms sometimes dense textures are clearly revealed. The Hungarian Dances are fine as well, but perhaps not as idiomatic as might be expected from a middle-European orchestra and conductor. Another great value and an enjoyable "value" download from Naxos wonderful series with Ms. Alsop. When the musicians of the Baltimore Symphony end their fit of temper over her appointment as Music Director they will find themselves in good hands indeed! Alsop is not only a fine woman conductor, more importantly she is an outstanding musician and leader regardless of gender.

Favorate symphonies of mine are the Brahms Symphonies, especially the lovely Symphony No. 2. A great conductor and orchestra are graded not on performance alone, but expecially on artistic inspiration. Marin Alsop and the London Philharmonic are at the core of that inspiration in this performance of the Brahms Symphony No. 2. I solute them. "Brilliant" A must have for all who love Brahms music.

This recording is one of the best I've heard of the No. 2! Absolutely brilliant performance by the Philharmonic and also by Alsop! Kudos! Recommended for all!

Marin - well known for her evocative performance of the American repetoire - now shows her mastery of Brahms
