  • Small Town Zen

Hal Ketchum's music and verse was the poetry of the American working class, circa 1980-1990, before the work left town, and welfare and the internet came along. His songs discovered obscure common strands between longshoreman ("I Miss My Mary")and rural teenagers ("Small Town Saturday Night." Great music, made before Nashville the guitars up too high and corporate black hat and hard body marketing took over.

If you don't understand Country music, Protest Music, or Swing Music tinged with some rocking Country You'll STILL "get" Hal Ketchum. I've been a fan since the '90's and I'm about to buy this greatest hits Album if I can't find my CD's soon. Hell, I'm prolly gonna do it even if I CAN'T find my CD's...

The 90's delivered some great county and Hal was one of those artist who put out a lot of radio songs. Great songs and just an all around nice guy. I worked in country radio back then and he was a pleasure whenever he came to town. Great songs on this album.

I've been on on the hunt for years to get the CD or download the Past the Point of Rescue record by Hal Katchem. I really thought iTunes would be my final stop. I check back often to see if its been uploaded -- I hope with this post it will appear. This specific record brings back special heart warming memories for me and my family - Anyone who is familiar with the record knows the song - "Long Day Coming" - It will touch anyone who has lost someone they hold dear to their heart.

What can I say except that I love his songs. I like a all kinds of music and he is one of my favorites. The lyrics are emotional and his voice smooth. Just good listening.

Hal Ketchum is one of the few country music singers that I can stand to listen to. This is probably due to the fact that his music completely transcends genre. He depicts small town America like no one before or after him, and captures the soul of this country (not country music). It’s so refreshing to hear music performed by a musician who doesn’t hide poor talent behind a larger than life country music superstar image. He doesn’t need to lay on a thick twang to legitimize himself. His music is just plain good, and it stands on its own. He'll never get the airplay he deserves, but it isn't for lack of good writing, it's for the lack of truth and reality that is so popular in the country music industry... oh yeah, and the fact that he doesn't have a stylist and a muscle shirt...
