I'm puzzled by the negative reviews. In a short few weeks, this has become one of my favorite Metheny albums. It's not Pat Metheny Group stuff, but if you've heard Metheny's Trio albums, you shouldn't be surprised with this recording. It jams. Roofdogs was great from the start. And although it took me a few listens to get into Come and See, Leaving Town, and Signals, it was worth the effort. If the first three minutes of Signals annoys, just skip it. What comes after that three minutes is unbelievably good.

Wow! This is a must have for any jazz lover. And I kind of like how there isn't a pianist; it gives the tunes a unique sound. Overall, a great album.

Spokane tuned-in and exposed to magic last night. Great sets and loved every beat of Signals performed live but totally channeled in the studio version. Thanks Pat et al for visiting the NW. Do come again please!

I saw this quartet perform these songs last night and had to buy. If you have never seen Pat Metheny perform, put it on your list of things to do. These guys are incredibly talented.

  • Smokin' Hot Band. Tepid Tunes.

Sorry fans of Pat Metheny (wait, that includes me!), this new recording grooves along and all, and the band is smokin' hot. Yet, somehow the tunes do not sonically thrill the way we'd want it to - at least to my ears. Not sure that matters anyway. My guess is this band will blow the roof off the tour circuit this summer regardless, simply because they are all such great players. But here, on this new recording of all originals, the compositions just aren't strong. Anyone who has followed Pat Metheny's splendid career knows that the hallmark of this man is his compositional genius. Yes, he is a great guitairst too, and every new recording provides further proof of his brilliance as a axe man. But what has always placed Metheny at the highest peak of musical accomplishemnt is that compositionally he is right up there with Ennio Morricone, Joe Zawinul, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Chopin, Grieg, Wayne Shorter, Aaron Copland, Ornette Coleman, Quincy jones, David Bowie, Gordon Sumner (Sting), MIles Davis, Thom Yourke. In other words, regardless the style he's working in at the time, Metheny releably writes intricately woven, harmonically sophisticated, melodically gorgeous, rhythmically creative music. Music that we LOVE. And so here, on this straight up recording, we hear just a taste of what Metheny can do on paper. There are some nice tunes to be certain, but the tell tale sign to me is the lack of rich rhythmic and harmonic development. It's all relatively straightforward, in the pocket, 4/4, nice sounding.....But I know, we all know, he can write much more intriguing music than this. My guess is this band was put together to have a blast on the concert circuit, and this recording will be something to listen to after the concert and remember how great the concert was. The compositions indicate that direction. I think Metheny wrote these tunes for that reason - to be foundational structures for he and his smokin' band to improvise on. Pat, if you are reading this. Kudos to you and the boys. These young guns are hot. Collectively it is clear you are all listening deeply to eachother and having a blast making fresh jazz. But man, I sure miss the rhythmic invention and dynamic range that you have so carefully crafted in other settings, and which has always inspired your team to play soaring jazz as they "sing" your songs.

First impression is good, with solid comps, and bursts of inspiration. Would like to see more of an edge on Potter's playing. Sanchez and Williams are bringing a new sensitivity to the rythym section, and Pat's playing is exemplary. Perhaps more of the orchestrion cut, and less of the more traditional fare. Overall, very enjoyable, but not groundbreaking.

Potter sounds so much like Brecker on this! Not hating him for it at all though! Beautiful music, great cast..buy it now! Metheny is always evolving and making beautiful music.

I'm a big fan of Mark Turner and Joshua Redman on the sax but this album gives me one more great sax player to listen to. Never have explored his music that much but he is awesome on this album. All the players shine on this record. One of the best jazz albums this year. 5 stars
