Reviews

  • An interesting effort

Glass's Orphee is neither particularly revolutionary (in the way his early operas were), nor is the music engaging from beginning to end. However, it's still a solid effort, more memorable than some of his other recent operas, and this recording has a couple of highlights - the Act II, Scene 3 duet is one of the most beautiful bits of music Glass has ever come up with, and the brief instrumental Act II, Scene 5 is also engaging. I saw a great production of this opera (based on the Cocteau film) in San Francisco which really played up the surreality of the story - I suspect this is one opera that really does need to be seen to be appreciated. Still, a should-get for Glass fans.
  • In responce to Phil

Why it is that you seem to have nothing better to do then stalk my reviews is both flattering and creepy. I appologize for the referrence to the Met. I remember it's premire there and mistook it for a commision. Still the remainer of your review only aguments the points that I had already made. In fact you re-iterated several of them so I'm baffled with the hate. It's a decent representation of the film Phil, you have nothing to be ashamed about. It's just not my thing. There's no need to be defensive and your most recent works, save perhaps the "American Four Seasons" is some of the best you've done in decades so take a chill and relax. Your legacy in music is still intact even if not everyone jives to it. -Bz
