  • Great recording

Another fine recording to add to the extensive list of top-notch Stravinsky recordings by Boulez. This interpretation of the 4 Etudes is much more energetic and exciting, IMHO, than the previous recording Boulez performed with Chicago on Deutsche Grammophon, which I also own. There is an older recording of Pulcinella that he conducted on the Sony Classical label with the New York Philharmonic: a fairly lackluster performance, probably due to the well-known tension between Boulez and the NY Phil musicians (read more about this online). This Chicago recording is vastly superior and more interesting, as: 1) Boulez has a very good rapport with the Chicago musicians, and 2) he has seemed to "open up" a little more to Stravinsky's neoclassical period works as he gets older (he aggressively protested in the past that Stravinsky's neoclassical output was a "waste of time.") It is great to hear these works with the Boulezian clarity and precision that many, including myself, are quite fond of. I'm still hoping that he will record the Symphony in C (this was excluded from his recording of the other Stravinsky symphonies on Deutsche Grammophon). I would love to hear his take on the work.
  • Great.

It's by the Chicago Symphony, and it's recent, so you KNOW it'll be great. However, I wish they would record some of Stravinsky's most famous works, like Petrushka, the violin concerto, Rite of Spring, Firebird. Maybe even the somewhat rarely played Scherzo fantastique.

@ProMusica - just FYI, this *is* a brand-new release, and was taped last March.
  • Chicago in it's glory

Boulez conducting Chicago Sym in Stravinsky works don't get any better than this. The recording sounds as fresh as if it were a brand new release. Bravo iTunes for making this release availiable.

Boulez performs a steller re-recording of familiar Stravinsky works. This only goes to show that not only is he the best composer we have, but also one of the best conductors. Readings of this exactness is the reason why the term "Boulezian" was invented. Tops all around. -Bz
