    There are several wonderful attributes which combine to make this one of my favorite recordings. Foremost is the unity of the variations. While each has its own form, each follows and preceeds in a style and feel that is common to all. Which is to say that Perahia does not force himself into the music. His awesome technique is a tool to bring us the music of Bach; never is it used to swell his own ego or to draw attention to the skill. And skill there is. The trills and flourishes which humanize the logic of Bach are here performed not as something to give the music a Baroque blush, but as important aspects of the music. They are both beautiful and serious. They are never sweet icing on a sombre cake. This is serious music. As a single, unified work it is a staggering effort. Yet each and every variation can stand alone, staggering in it own right. Perahia's respect for and understanding of one of Bach's major accomplishments is obvious in every bar, as he calls forth tonalities from the piano few pianists can achieve. This, for instance, is the first time I ever heard the sound of a bell conjured from a Steinway. We have here not just notes perfectly played. No, here we have anger, sweetness, desire,peace as needed drawn from each note. From an instrument on which you cannot change the mouthpiece or the reed to alter tone. How Perahia does that is one of life's mysteries for me. Five stars. (ten to Bach)

    I have two or three other interpretaions of the Goldberg Variations and I can tell you after listening to this just once, it is easily my favorite: lots of emotion and depth without being sentimental or romantic and the recording itself is excellent– the piano has a beautiful timber. Angela Hewitt's recording is also quite good, but personally I find Glen Gould way over-rated... its like Bach on methamphetamines (in fact it IS Bach on methamphetamines). I can only take small doses of it. This recording however, is alive and breathing.
