I sat down with this album and said, Meh, I realize Cedric said this is their "pop" album but it's THEIR pop album What The Volta has done is craft an album with a unique sound. It is popish in some respects, but I know of no "pop" artists who do things remotely close to what these guys do. This was my last Volta album, I picked up all the others and listened to them before, that being said this is a solid cut of Volta sound.

I'm in love with this album, as well as all their previous work. Everything TMV has done has hit me at an emotional and intellectual level. I'm not sure why. Been listening to this one a lot more that the others. So chill and I've definitely been in a chill mood as of late...
  • Stepping back, but only a little bit.

Fantastic album, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as the previous 4 masterpieces.

This album has a place in my heart. Before i discovered this cd I was a metalhead that turned down anything that didnt have screaming, chugging and/or double bass drumming. After i heard octahedron i found out that there was stuff out there besides metal that was listenable. I gave this album four stars because in my opinion it is TMV's worst. dont get me wrong, this album is a masterpeice just not by Mars Volta standards. All of their other albums blow this one out of the water. I think this is their worst because it lacks the emotion and intensity of their previous works. The standout tracks on this album are Luciforms, Cotopaxi and with twilight as my guide. But you would be better off buying the whole thing.

I know TMV doesnt care what people think and thats rad, but the fact that Cedric openly admitted that he considered this their "pop record" makes me feel like they do in fact care what the mainstream thinks. Ya know? ...and i know you shouldnt compare one TMV album to another because they purposely make every one different (like every great band should do), but making a pop record to appeal to a wider audience rather than blowing the minds of your loyal fans that have been there since De-loused? I dont get it. I can listen to it and appreciate it as music but not as a TMV album. I can only wish that they try to redeem theirselves and do something genuinly unpredictable & far out for their next album.
  • If the Mars Volta wanted 9 tracks, they woulda called it Nonahedron

Omar Rodriguez Lopez is one of the best guitarists today, and anything that he is involved in should at least be paid attention. The real reason I'm writing this is because the album is called OCTAHEDRON, which refers to an eight-sided three dimensional figure. I bought the CD when it came out, and there are 8 tracks on it. But in the iTunes store, it has nine tracks, which is idiotic. "Credits" is not a track, get it out of here. the first track is really 7:21. I don't know if it's Warner Brothers or iTunes, but it's just wrong. If the Mars Volta wanted 9 tracks, they would have called it Nonahedron. The fact that the album is 11 bucks is also unsettling considering the price of their other ones. But really, Credits? Come on

I think I do miss the crazy Omar-solos on Octahedron, but I forgive them, seeing that none of the songs here would be improved by that wild, insane guitar of his that I love. Halo of Nembutals has some excellent work from the guitar-god, but you need to listen carefully, because it's not as "in-your-face" as usual. Also, Luciforms, and Teflon, are true TMV masterpieces, and all in all, I think the band has matured and is on top of their game. I recently saw them live - twice, and I can assure you, there is no lack of the technically improbable solos in their live shows. Omar's love of the guitar truly shone through, on stage, whereas this cd is not so much about him, but about the band as a whole. Highly recommended.
  • They don't care

The Mars Volta don't care what you think, nor should they. They are out there putting their heart into the records, creating this art form that transcends music and delves into life, death, and the immortal. If we don't understand it, or can't appreciate it, it doesn't matter. Me, it speaks to me and while some bits are better than others, its a journey and I hope it continues for a long time. . . .
