  • It's ok.

There's a reason why these songs didn't make it on Narrow Stairs. They're not horrible, just not great either. I'm not really digging the vibe from "Little Bribes" and "A Diamond and a Tether." My fav song from the EP is "My Mirror Speaks." Awesome track and really the only good thing about it. The last is good, but forgettable. And the Talking Bird demo is just Ben and a ukulele. Overall, just ok EP with two bad songs, one really good one, and one decent one. EPs are just that though, tracks that were recorded and didn't make it on the album. Now if this had been a full length album of this style, it'd be different. Either way, Death Cab fan for life.
  • This is a great e.p.

One of the best I've ever heard. I think the best song on the e.p. is I Was Once a Loyal Lover. It spins a beautiful yarn of a man who just can not find love even though it may seem like a sad song the track is actually quite upbeat. Diamond and a Tether a good folksy song hinting towards Ben's like of indie folk. Little Bribes the most popular song on the e.p. draws a beautiful picture of what Las Vegas is like. My Mirror Speaks a great song with perfect use of metaphors. Overall I don't see how these songs were cut from Narrow Stairs. Just do yourself a favor and download this now.
  • Nice Mix; 3 stars because Talking Bird file is "corrupt"

Excellent EP though after download itunes displays "corrupt file error" for the Talking Bird (Demo) track :/ ...after multiple attempts with the "check for available downlaods" option under store tab the file still displays as "corrupt". Hope this issue is resolved soon; I would like to hear the full track seeing I did purchase the EP.

"Narrow Stairs" felt like its own title suggested; it was claustrophobic, confusing, and, at times, frustrating. The band every angsty dude fell in love with back during "Transatlanticism" and "Photo Album" embraced a more metric approach to composition and lyrics. Deep, but predictable. Profound, but pedestrian. "The Open Door" was a welcome refresher. The band seemed more amped about their angst, but didn't stoop to nostalgic retreds of their "classic" hits. Even the "Talking Bird" demo has a looseness to it that its more polished counterpart transformed into a droll ditty. "Diamond and a Tether" has a bouncy breath of fresh air inside of it, while "I Was Once A Loyal Lover" expounds upon the inevitable failures of life without unnecessary moral preaching. EP Highlight, however, is the beautiful "Mirror Speaks." Ben's best lyrics and a pulsing percussion driven by Walla's entrancing guitar melody make this song less of a reprieve from life, and more like a symbol of it. "These eyes don't shine half as bright as they used to do, and they haven't for quite a while." We're all getting a little grayer, a little more dusty, but Death Cab sound fresh wallowing in their own decline.

Certainly Death Cab's best work, in my opinion better than any of there albums. All of the songs in this ep are so good. I personally like this demo version of Talking Bird a whole lot more than the one on Narrow Stairs. Death Cab's lyrics are actually really meaningful if you pay attention to them, which is definitely one of there best qualitys. Little Bribes is one of the only songs by Death Cab that really has a lot of energy, which I love. My Mirror Speaks is another great song by them, with great bass. A Diamond and a Tether is one of Death Cabs best songs, I just cant say anything bad about. I Was Once A Loyal Lover is probably my least favorite but it is still a good song, I like the ending a lot. I really also like the bonus video for Grapevine Fires, which is also a really good song with sweet drums. Altogether, this was a great ep, in the ranks of Modest Mouses 'No Ones First and You're Next'.

I've never really been a fan of Death Cab. I fact, the only song I had liked of theirs is crooked teeth. When I stumbled upon this EP, I was taken aback. There's actually some diversity and depth to these songs. No wonder why this was nominated for a Grammy. My Mirror Speaks is definitely my favorite song by this band now. I hope to hear more quality music from this band in the future. I highly recommend buying this CD (from a more than critical listener of this band).
